I'm sure this question has been posted my times but I haven't been able to find any good answers. In a nut shell, what is the best way to go from a dvd to a cdr with the best quality and having the outcome span no more then 4 cd's. I want to be able to take a move (typicaly 2 hrs worth) and be able to put it on cdr media. I understand the first part which is ripping the dvd (vob files) to the hard drive. From there, I'm not quite sure what path to take. Do I convert the vob to svcd, vcd, xvcd, etc? What configurations should I change in the conversion software to increase the quality? I know once the conversion is done and I'm left with an mpg, it needs to be split and burned onto cd. I planned on using nero for the burning.
Can someone either point me in the right direction or assist me. I know all the manuels are out there on how to do it but no off them answers my question. I need the start to finish process. Also can you tell me what the software of choice is. I greatly appreciate any feed back. Thanks.

I know all the how-tos are there but what format should I use? svcd, vcd, xvcd? And how many cdr will it take to get really good quality from a dvd movie.

Follow randallc's link, he is right. If you understand those procedures, then it is time to ask for optimizing.
If your dvd player support SVCD, then go for SVCD, because it is a standard with quite a good quality (if well done). Do the encodes with TMPGEnc., it's free and one of the best MPEG encoders, calculate with 40-50 minutes of video on 1 CD. I suggest to decode and frameserve with DVD2AVI and encode with TMPGEnc. This is quite a newbie-friendly method.

Quality is a matter of personal taste, some like me would say VCD, others would say SVCD, and even more others would say XVCD/XSVCD, each type needs diffrent number of CDR's per movie.
Your best way is to try and see what you like best, a general example would be something like this:
VCD = 1 to 2 CDR's per movie
SVCD = 3 or more CDR's per movie
XVCD/XSVCD = Depends on settings being used
SeVCD/SxVCD = Whole movie on 1 CDR (depends on movie length)

I actually tried creating a vcd and had problems with the quality. When viewing it on a computer through Windows media player at a very small size it looks fine. But when I tried it in a friends dvd player hooked up to a regular size tv, the quality was very poor. I'm assuming I probably need to adjust the settings. The movie was 1:45 minutes and came out to a 1.3 gig mpg. I'm in the processes of buying a dvd player, I was thinking about a 5 or 7 disk player for those multiple cdr's. Can you recomend any, or what do you think about that idea. Also, is it better to go from avi or mpg when creating a vcd?

I don't know why you had problems with Quality, all my movies are VideoCD or SxVCD, and i've got a 28" TV, sure it isn't 40 or 50", but it's good enough for me.
Quality of my VCD's is beyond VHS when it's played back on the TV, mostly cause all my VCD's are DVD direct.
And no, I would defenetly not recommand you to go from DVD to AVI to MPG, go direct from DVD to MPG whenever you can! using an AVI inbetween will reduce quality!
