It's completely up to the studios which codec they will use for pre-recorded material (aka movies), so if MS tries to milk them too hard for VC-1 license fees, they will just use h.264.
It'll be interesting to see if you are right, after news of Sony et. al. buying MGM.

Part of a news story, which caught my eye:
Including the titles owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment, the Sony group will now control about 40 percent of all movies ever produced by Hollywood, according to some estimates.

For Sony, owning MGM could also advance its cause in the battle to establish the next DVD format. Sony is part of a consortium that supports the Blu-ray format against a format called HD DVD, which is endorsed by Japan's NEC Corp. and others.

I'm still not sure about M$Soft & DVD but i will say this. I just installed Red Hat 9 on my other machine and....OMG How in blazes do you get any downloaded programs to install?!? First you unzip the tarball, but wait it's the source so you've got to go to command line to compile it.....oh wait, You're missing these 5 other pieces?! You go to unzip them and AYIEE THEY"RE missing other parts!!! All of a sudden $89.99 for Setup.exe is looking pretty good. I WILL get it, but it is certainly more difficult than I had anticipated, My apologies to Mr Gates.

    Have fun stormin' the castle!
