Is there a guide yet as to how to burn a DVD+R DL disc successfully? I'm reluctant to try it again unless I know a procedure.

Woundn't you just use the same procedure as you use for DVD-5 ?

DVDDecrypter ISO Read/ISO Write perhaps ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. the question is weather or not your dvd player will play it? don't think there is to many players out there yet that can play DL dvds yet. burning it should not be the simple part.

Well, my quest to find a good procedure stems from the fact that the first disc I burned not only refused to work in the set-top player, it also wouldn't play back on the DVD burner that I burned it on after re-insertion. I was very unimpressed, to say the least.

I have been told that the way DVDDecrypter burns to DVD-9 might not entirely be foolproof as yet.

I have a version of Nero that came with my drive (Nero Express). Not sure if it supports DL recording. How would I find out?

    Maybe check nero's website ?

I would think you might have to update it to the latest version though.
    If in doubt, Google it.

An OEM version? I wasn't aware I could update one of them.

You might be right - I've never tried updating an OEM version.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I've only tried to burn one +R DL so far, and I am still not certain exactly what I did wrong, which is what I have been trying to ascertain. There doesn't seem to be a procedure that works in any guide here, which is annoying because people seem to have successfully done the copies. If I could only make a backup that at least plays on the burner that made it, I wouldn't be asking anymore.

On my hard drive, I have Nero Express and Powerproducer Gold as well as the stuff already in my profile (latest versions of DVDDecrypter and DVDShrink). I also have a version of the full Nero suite that I could install, but would that support DL burning? I know Powerproducer does, but I don't know if the functionality of the program will allow me to back up films or not.

  11. I bought a Pioneer A08 and it came with a OEM version of Nero. I upgrade it to Nero 6 and try to burn my first DVD+R DL with Nero Recode and Nero 6. It was acomplete failure. Then I try again making an image and the burning that image and it was a complete succesfull...

DL is still a bit new for me just yet. I'll wait for you pioneers to get the methods and guides down pat and swoop in about 12 months time when media is about $3 a disc
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm not so concerned with when the procedure is cheap, just when it is feasible. At $14.95 a disc (current Australian price in case anyone cares), I need a guide that says "if you follow this procedure to the letter, you have a good chance of turning out a disc that works in the burner drive". I think at that price per disc, such an ask is reasonable before committing more support to the format.

    It is a reasonable request.

at those prices, it is not feasible to me just yet.

As I mentioned in the other thread, can IFOEdit possibly do what you need it to do ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I used my Pioneer 108 to do two DL burns. Both worked perfectly on my three DVD players (Sony, Samsung 841, Pioneer 210 recorder) and my NEC 5800 DVD-Rom drive. I used the latest DVD Decrypter 3.5.1.0 in iso mode ( read/write). The media I used was Verbatim DL Disc.

I wouldn't know if IFOedit could do what I wanted it to do. This is for the simple reason that when I tried to use it to do the last thing I wanted it for (adding chapters to a DVD), I wound up so confused that my head almost exploded. I suspect that IFOedit was programmed by the same people who are responsible for SUSE Linux.

I understand your reluctance to research a guide, given the price of the discs. That's the main reason why I am not researching the guide myself. However, there are people who have claimed that they have burned a DVD+R DL that works not only on DVD-ROM drives, but on standalone players, so it isn't like the knowledge isn't out there.

Surely it wouldn't be so hard for the makers of DVDShrink or DVDDecrypter to add the option to add a layer change in a position of the user's choosing?

It doesn't sound hard to us

is the whole unknown with DL mainly to do with the positioning of the layer break ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

It's also hard to get a good understanding of where a fault lies when current standalones aren't too reliable with burned DL media. We are a generation too early in the technology timeline to create a foolproof method.
