[Sorry for posting two posts in one day...]
I'm having some trouble with Maxell, I really don't know what my problem is, but I can't seem to burn DVD-Video with them. I can burn DVD-ISO fine, but then it doesn't play in my DVD Player. I tried burning a DVD-Video on a DVD+R from another brand and it works fine. Should I return these Maxell DVD+Rs?
NOTE: The Maxell DVDs are DVD+R, not DVD-R. I had the same problem with DVD-R though...

Or try running a blank through DVDInfo [Pro] and post the media code...

Mine are Made in Taiwan.... so they're not good?

doesn't mean that it is not made for DVD-VIDEO, it just means that there is no movie on the DVD+R. There is no way that my DVD+R is not made for DVD-VIDEO because on the case of the DVD+R, it says "DVD+R Data-Video" -

If I decide to buy DVD+Rs from another brand, what brand do you suggest. I'm planning on buying Memorex (I buy their CD-Rs), is it a good choice for DVD+Rs?

Memorex DVD MEDIA SUCKS! They could be manufactured by CMC which is crappy media. The media code you provided showed the MAXELL DVD+R is RICOH which is good media. If I decide to buy DVD+Rs from another brand, what brand do you suggest. I'm planning on buying Memorex (I buy their CD-Rs), is it a good choice for DVD+Rs?
Your problem could be on how you're authoring and burning the dvds. What programs are you using to back up dvds? DVD SHRINK? Your problem isn't the MAXELL DVD MEDIA. -
I'm sorry if I'm getting anoying here, but I burned my DVD compilation on the BenQ DVD+RW and it worked perfectly fine, then I burned the SAME thing on my Maxell DVD+Rs, and it fails. Then I tried burning a Data DVD+R on the Maxells and it worked........... So to summarize, it looks to me like I can't burn a DVD-Video on my Maxell DVD+Rs--but I CAN burn Data.... I don't know if this makes sense to anyone...

It's the discs then. Try a different kind, or try them on a different burner.Originally Posted by sacred ff

Maxell in 50spindle from Futureshop is made in Taiwan(CMC). But if you buy the Maxell 10 pack in case from Futureshop is made in Japan(RicohJpnR01).

What exactly are you trying to backup? a dvd movie? I would suggest you try DVD SHRINK which is free software and is much better than COPY TO DVD, & RECORD NOW. There are known software conflicts if you have both SONIC RECORD NOW and NERO installed on your pc with certain brands of DVD BURNERS. I'd uninstall the SONIC RECORD NOW and just use NERO BURN. You could uninstall NERO BURN as well and then use NERO CLEAN TOOL then reinstall the NERO BURN.
Use DVD SHRINK to compress dvd movie then use NERO to burn. I still think it's a software issue and not a MAXELL DVD+R MEDIA problem.

I have had excellant success with RICOHJPNR01 DVD+Rs. I have used them branded as TDK, Sony and Maxell. I have had poor luck with CMC media branded as Verbatium, HP and others.
I have literaly burned hundreds of them in my Philips standalone DVD recorder and on my HP400I drive on my PC. I usually use DVDDecryptor or Pinnacle InstantDisc to burn on the PC for maximum compapability. I also make sure the book type is DVD-ROM.
I don't think your problem is the RICOH DVDs, its either your burner or software or procedure.

Taiyo-Yuden make the best DVD+Rs, and those are the only DVD+Rs I'd suggest you use.Originally Posted by sacred ff
After that, I'd rate DVD+Rs in the following order:- 1. 8X Verbatim Datalife Plus MCC
2. RicohJapan
3. Ritek (I wouldn't use this because of problems with G04 DVD-R. Too much of a question mark for me.)
If your burner supports DVD-R, there's a lot more good media out there.[/list] - 1. 8X Verbatim Datalife Plus MCC

Actually, MCC, MAxELL, and TDK also make very nice DVD+Rs. RICOHPNR0x are all RiTEK-manufactured, but use Ricoh dye/processes.Originally Posted by Bodysurf

MCC, MXL and TDK don't make any DVD+R media. They all supply in CMC or RICOH.

Har? MCC made in Singapore isn't made by Ricoh or CMC, and MXL does indeed make its own DVD+R media now, though it's not available outside of Japan at the moment. The media codes for the MXL are MAXELL001 (4x) and 002 (8x). As for TDK, there is +R media out there with its own media codes too (TDK001 and TDK002) but I think they are made in Taiwan so CMC probably manufactures them.Originally Posted by lordsmurf

Thanks for all your help, but my burner is just not capable of burning on Maxell DVD+Rs, I really don't know how. I even tried burning anything on it and it won't work... It worked once, though
I know it's weird, but It only burned successfully once on 20 tries.
I saw this on another topic: Is it possible to not be able to burn on some media if my computer is infected by ad/share-ware and/or viruses? Cuz I have a little trouble with those right now...
(But keep in mind that I burned over 15 times so far on the BenQ DVD+RW disc and it never failed, it's just the maxell DVD+Rs...)
Thanks for all of those who are trying to help me here, I really appreciate it

Actually, I encoded an anime using TMPGenc and compiled the DVD using DVD-lab to add menus and all. I tried encoding another anime but I have the same problem. I also burned the same project on my BenQ DVD+RW disc and it burned it successfully. I guess my burner just can't burn on Maxell DVD+Rs.Originally Posted by budz
I just want to know if there are any other people who own a BenQ DW800A DVD+R who have the same problem as me.
Again, thanks for all those helping me, I know this is starting to get long...

Yuh know you wanted help and suggestions were made but you have not responded to the suggestions or say if you even tried them out. Hard to help you out if you don't let us know if you've tried the suggestions that were made to you. Thanks for all your help, but my burner is just not capable of burning on Maxell DVD+Rs, I really don't know how. THERE ISN'T ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE MAXELL DVD+R MEDIA. It's the way you're authoring the dvds and the software you're using. As someone mentioned to you already the problem could be the procedure you're using that is causing you to burn coasters. Good luck in getting help from this site because in my opinion you haven't helped yourself by taking the suggestions that were given to you.

Yeah, but even if the way I'm authoring it is wrong, I burned the same project on another DVD+R (actually, it was a DVD+RW) and it worked perfectly fine, I even played it in my DVD player and it plays perfectly with the menu and everything! So that means that the way I'm authoring it is not wrong, cuz it worked on another brand's disc, but when I try to burn the SAME, and I mean EXACT SAME thing on the Maxell DVD+Rs, it doesn't work! Sorry if I didn't get to explain this right. Here's an easier way to understand:Originally Posted by budz
THE SAME PROJECT ON TWO DIFFERENT BRANDS:
BenQ DVD+RW disc* : Burns pefectly fine
Maxell DVD+R disc : Fails at 0% with any tool
*this is not my burner, it's a sample DVD+RW disc that came with my burner, don't mix them up
I know nothing is wrong with my Maxell DVD+Rs because it worked...ONCE. I was trying another thing (a data dvd) and it worked, but only ONCE. I tried again and it failed. I don't know what I did that ONE time, but I can't seem to do it again, even if I try burning another data dvd, it still fails. This problem has nothing to do with the way I'm authoring my movie, because I can't get my burner to burn ANYTHING on the Maxell DVD+Rs. Not even a simple 200kb JPEG.Originally Posted by budz
Note: the ONE time that it worked, I used Nero 6 Ultra. -
Where can these be purchased? Thanks.Originally Posted by Gen-AnWant my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

8X Verbatim Datalife Plus DVD+R (MCC) can be purchased in lots of places, such as Sam's Club (search for item 711439), NewEgg or Meritline.Originally Posted by lordsmurf
However, I have little need for this anymore since 8X DVD-R is about the same price. -

Yep. NewEgg had them for $49.00 for 50 a few weeks ago.Originally Posted by budz

I ordered 4x Taiyo Yuden Printable DVD-R 50 pack spindle from Rima.com that cost me $73.51 which includes shipping to Hawaii. There is a store here called COSMO MEDIA that sells Taiyo Yuden DVD media. The prices there are so high because they are the only store that sells them. If I had purchased the same Taiyo Yuden DVD-R printables from COSMO, it would have cost me $93.22. That's highway robbery to me!I think 8X Taiyo-Yuden DVD-Rs are still the "gold standard" as far as the bext recordable DVDs on the market now, and the price is better than the Verbatim 8X DatalifePluses.

That's why I buy in bulk from Office Depot when MAXELL DVD-R 4x media is on sale. But I won't be buying the 50 pack spindles that are made in TAIWAN.
