  1. Up to now I have been using DVDShrink for doing straight backups of my DVDs, is this the best tool for the job?

Does anyone recommend any other tool to do the job?

    Thanks

  2. To make "straight backups" of your CD or DVD use the software that came with your burner (ie: Roxio or Nero)... it will be faster that Decrypter or Shrink.

Assuming that the disc isn't CSS protected, of course.. In which case a DeCSS'able ripper is needed (ie: DVDDecrypter); or an intermediate such as AnyDVD, then feed it into Nero/Roxio/etc.

you been smoking again, DVD_Ripper ?

I didn't know nero or roxio could decrypt CSS.

DVDShrink or DVD2One are my tools of choice. If I have a DVD-5 I just use DVDDecrypter ISO Read / DVD Decrypter ISO Write.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I always use DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter, but since the need has arisen to make backups with a second layer of space, I've also been trying to find something that allows me to specify a time for the layer change, or at least more reliably burn the discs. DL burning is still something that needs to be worked out from the looks of it.

Have you tried using Shrink with the 'Remove Layer Break" disabled in Preferences ? Then writing to an ISO. This should retain the original break point, should it not ?

Theory usually does - practice is often another matter though . . . . .

Since I tend to do movie-only backups even when the target is a DL, it never crossed my mind to not remove the layer break. I would have thought that the break would have been placed on its own by the program... I guess I lost that Windoze-infected cynicism for a moment. <sigh>

Is it possible to use IFOEdit to strip back to movie only and remove the layer break altogether ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

I would hate to let the program decide the layer break for me. How the hell would Shrink (or any other program) know the difference between a fade to black and the middle of a car chase ?

I think I read somewhere to do the above and use Copy 2 DVD to burn the iso direectly. The person who reported it stated that Nero would not flag tyhe layer break properly / standalone player would freeze at the break. Using Copy 2 DVD apparently produced a DL 1:1 copy of the movie and it played flawlesly on the same player. I have a NEC 2510DL internal drive but have yet to try to backup a full disk to DL. Time will tell
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

Now if by straight backups you mean:
DVD9 to DVD5 keeping menus, extras and all soundtracks and subtitles

then there are some other tools besides (NOT instead) DVDShrink you could use.

First that comes to mind is DVDRebuilder. I use it when the film needs more than 80% compression. It does take a lot longer though.

Are you still interested in this? Could you clarify "straight backups"? Do you really want keep everything in every case? If not, there are more options...
    It wasn't me.

CopyToDVD works just fine I've burned a few DL and it seems to work fine.I don't think it will allow you to specify the layer break though.
