  1. Hi,

i read in the Pinnacle Studio 8 User Manual, that there are 3 options for capturing a DV (from a camcorder).

    - Preview - not really an option for me

    - DV - fullqulity DV capture, 1 hour needs about 13GB

    - MPEG (with quality presets: low, medium, high).

    1. My question is, if I want to capture a DV and burn a VCD from it, witch option should I choose? Is it worth to capture in full DV quality in this case or is it enough to take MPEG with "low" option?

    2. What's actually the difference between the DV and MPEG Option? When should I use whitch and why? When editing, burning (VCD, SVCD, DVD) which type is the most comfortable to work with?

    3. Should I capture in full DV ONLY if I want to play it back to the tape (camcorder)?

    Thanx

DV is in AVI format which is better suited for editing, it's essentially an exact copy of what is on your tape. It is best suited for editing, adding transitions, title tracks, overlays ect. It will then have to be encoded to DVD compliant mpg or VCD compliant mpg depending on what you want. The trick to maintaining quality is to only convert it to mpg once and if your going to play it back to tape not at all.

Use the mpg option for video you plan on burning direct to disc. Cutting, splitting and joining videos together really aren't considered editing as far as mpg goes providing your editor doesn't reencode the video. When capturing using the mpg option pick the option and settings that's compliant with the type of video you want to burn (e.g DVD or VCD) so it only has to be encoded once.
