I'm guessing from the software that you're doing (S)VCD authoring. So, the "(S)VCD Authoring" forum, or the "Newbie / General discussions" forum would be the answer.

State what you're doing as well as which tool you're using if the above isn't the case.

Also, questions of that kind are best placed in the "Feedback" forum - frequented by Baldrick (site Administrator) and moderators.

You forgot the old standby. Post your message, accompanied by this:

Actually, I was trying to use Dvd2Svcd to convert an AVI to a format that could be burned to a DVD.
I was following the instructions provided on this site.
    Which forum do you recommend?

Your post is now in the right forum.

To convert an AVI to an MPG for burning to a DVD, you need to encode it to MPEG-2 (see "DVD" under "What Is" - top left - for specs). DVD2SVCD won't do the job (unless something's changed recently).

There are a number of tools that do encoding, the four most popular ones I've seen mentioned are (in no particualr order):

    1. TMPGEnc
    2. Cinemacraft Encoder
    3. Mainconcept MPEG Encoder
    4. Canopus ProCoder

For others, look under "Video Encoders" in the "Tools" section.

I use TMPGenc, and this link:

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=725433#725433

...may prove useful. Even if you don't end up using TMPGEnc, there's a lot of useful stuff (including the links that are referenced) that will provide a good background.

    Hope that helps. Good luck...

Sorry, I've mislead you - DVD2SVCD itself won't do the encoding, instead it farms it out to TMPGEnc (or Canopus ProCoder) to do the job.

I initially went down this route and found it frustrating that I couldn't configure my encoding as much as I wanted to through DVD2SVCD, so I plumped for TMPGEnc to do my encoding, and hence the details posted in the link I gave you.

    Your choice...

If you wanna stick with DVD2SVCD, post the error messages and hopefully I, or someone, will be able to help.

EDIT: I've just read your post about the error message and it's raised a few questions:

    1. What's the details of the AVI? Use AVICodec to find out...
    2. At what stage does it happen?
    3. Are you using TMPGEnc or Canopus ProCoder?

IMO I'd suggest you consider using TMPEGnc (or any other encoder) directly as you have removed a layer of complication and uncertainty as to what's causing any problems.

Also, the guides here are excellent and tailored for the encoders themselves, rather than software that uses them.

It is a DvdxNetworks DivxV5 Mp3. Both the audio and video portions at the bottom of the AviCodec screen display 'supported'.
I am using TmpGEnc and the last part of the dvd2Svcd_log.txt follows:

I think (it's been a while) that the problem lies with TMPGEnc not being able to encode MP3. I'm not sure about the DivX5 AVI.

The fact that they're both "supported" just means that you've got codecs for both the audio and video in the AVI file. This doesn't mean that TMPGEnc accepts them.

You're next question is "How do I get around this?". Well, in short, I don't know as I'm not intimately familiar with DVD2SVCD. I'm far more familiar with TMPGEnc and can guide you if you want to go down that route...

The TMPGEnc route is fine. The reason I used DVD2SVcd is because I was following a guide that I found on this site.
I am not concerned about chapters. However, I am concerned about the quality of the audio and video to the extent that I am willing to spend more of my time (or the computer's) in obtaining the result.
How would you suggest I proceed?

Go to the link I posted (my 2nd post) earlier in this thread.

Read that - there's a lot of info on settings, extracting the audio to WAV (what you'll need to do), encoding the video and audio (can be done together or separately). Both the links I reference are both really good for easy-to-follow yet detailed info on TMPGEnc and it's various settings.

Have a play on a short AVI (you can use VirtualDub to trim to a copy of the original) and come back with any questions...

    Good luck.

There are no files names in that directory that begin with 'MPlex_Muxed'.

  20. Check your drives for the files. DVD2SVCD may have been set to save the files to a different folder and/or drive.

You should also look for the "F:\DVDTEMP\Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_PAL.mpv" "F:\DVDTEMP\Encoded_audio_1.mp2" files. The free space before and after the multiplex phase is virtually the same. This suggests that the multiplex failed.

  22. Check the program that demuxes your AVI file and creates the separate video (.MPV) and audio (.MP2) streams. I'm at work now but I think that it's DVD2AVI. It looks like there's a problem with your AVI file or you don't have the right codec installed.

Are you referring to the multiplex setting in Dvd2Svcd?
If so, the audio/video muxer is C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\DVDAuthor\mplex.exe

  24. No, DVD2SVCD executes another program (DVD2AVI ?) that creates the Encoded_Video_****.MPV and Endoded_Audio_***.MP2 files before the multiplexing even begins.

Post the DVD2SVCD.LOG file. The information should be at the beginning of the log file.

TMPGEnc created a 4.2GB file somewhere. Do a search of your F:\ drive with Windows Explorer and narrow it down to files updated between 2004/08/29 5:06:08 PM and
    2004/08/29 8:13:18 PM

Hopefully "F:\DVDTEMP\Encoded_Video_TMPGEnc_PAL.mpv" will show up. If not, that's why MPLEX is failing.

  30. Let me take one last shot because I'm running out of theories. Can you post the F:\DVDTEMP\AviSynth_Script_file.avs file? I use CCE myself but maybe someone with more experience with TMPGEnc can resolve your problem.
