  1. Sorry, this has probably been addressed alot but movie maker keeps freezing on me, especially when I try to drag the overlay titles to a different spot. Is there any way to fix this so that movie maker will run smoother, or is this just another piece of junk software from microsoft? I have Win XP Home SP1 AMD Athlon XP 3200+, 512 RAM, 160 GB hdd if that helps. Thanks.

I never bothered with it. I always just assumed as much.

Yep. Microsoft does many things great...video is not one of them.

I spent a few hours with MM and noticed the exact same thing as you. I downloaded the lastest version and still had some anamolies and occassional lock-ups. Went on to another app. Right now I use:

    - MainConcept for DV to MPEG Capture
    - Womple MPEG Wizard for editing and transition adds (for 1/2 D1)
    - Pinnacle Studio 8 for more enchanced editing but only on Full D1 captures)
    - DVD MovieFactory for authoring and final burn.

    Is that free or trialware?

If you want to move on to other apps, that's fine. There are certainly more powerful editing programs available, but if you'd like to try to get WMM to work, you might want to try this:

About a year ago I had the same problem with WMM freezing up and generally misbehaving. Based on information provided by Microsoft Error Reporting, I did a search on my machine for a file called SubTitDS.ax. I cut it out of wherever it was, but saved a copy as a backup, just in case.

Lo and behold, WMM has worked fine ever since, and nothing else on my computer seems to be messed up by removing that file. For once, that Error Reporting was useful. Hope this helps you, too.
