Ripping PS2 movies

Whats up everyone! i need some help. i want to rip the movies of the game metal gear solid 2. I have iso buster, vlc play, and vcd gear. i was able to extract the .dat file but now how do i turn it into an mpeg file, i tried it with vcd gear and it said mpeg stream missing. if anyone knows better softwear or a better way to do it please help me. im lost and could really use some help

Usually with PS2 games .DAT files don't necessarily mean that they have mpeg data in them. That's probably why it's saying that "the mpeg stream is missing". Usually video games have their own form of video in them and they may just use the .DAT extension when programming.

In my opinion when I've tried to do this (convert things from a PS2 game) in the past I just ended up with a lot of wasted time and useless programs on my PC. I would recommend connecting your PS2 directly to your PC (via capture card/device if you have one) and recording the video directly to your PC as it is playing in the game. This saves you a lot of time a headache (if you can get to the video in the game easily, that is). If it's an intro to the game it shouldn't be that hard. Doing it in this manner can allow you do control many more aspects of the video than converting it can.

If converting is your only option then I suggest trying the following. Many media programs can read .DAT files if they have the correct mpeg stream inside them. To find out if this file that you are trying to convert does in fact have mpeg data inside it then try opening the file in a media player such as WinAmp or Windows Media Player. If the file plays fine then it is a problem with your conversion software. If not, then the .DAT file probably is not of a video type that a conversion program with recognize. Also try opening it up in VirtualDub and see if you can import the file into that.
