  1. Before you say search I already did. I am from Europe and I use a PAL VCR. I read the requirements and it said minimum ME or 2000. I use Windows 98SE. Can I really not use an ATI card?

I used win 98 with my aiw radeon 32mb with no problems. I just used windows me drivers. As far as I know you should be able to use it...You just will not be able to have any file over 4gb.

The 8500DV AIW is the one that everyone complains is the worst that ATI have ever made. Have a look at Lordsmurfs pages at http://www.digitalfaq.com/. Should still work under 98SE though.

The 128 Rage series is getting very old now and, while they will work (I've still got a AIW 128 Rage chipset AGP card in a 1.33 GHz Athlon system that I keep in case my main one goes down. This was my previous video editing machine but even that ran Win XP) you'd be much better off getting a Radeon based card. Anything from Radeon 7000 or later will do the job and will work with PAL if you get a European version.

I agree. Stay with AIW radeon cards and you will get good quality. When i started out in video I had a rage128 and did not like it very much. I quickly upgraded to a Radeon AIW and have been very happy with it.

I have a choice between the two, you say Rage is not good, is the other one:

ATI All in Wonder 128 Pro PCI 32M Video Card

    Is this one a Radeon?

Get the biggest baddest AIW raedon that you can afford. It is a killer peice of hardware. But get ready for a software nightmare. Lordsmurfs site has helped me learn alot about it and it still can make me cuss. I would say that it is time to upgrade to XP though. Actually I would say put it in its own video only PC w/ XP and a firewire card and you got all you need for just about any video task

If you read previous posts from most European members with ATI cards, they seem to be the absolute worst garbage you could ever buy, as opposed to most North Americans, myself included who would buy nothing less. You might want to look at what the reasons were/are that made those European members feel that way about ATI before you outlay the cash and end up disappointed with the result.
Just shut up and listen dumbass

8500DV ... bad card, IEEE port caused problems

128PRO ... must be hacked for ATI MMC 8.7 (series 8, no hacks for series 9) ... 5-year-old card

    RADEON AIW ... get these

Nepadigital ... false MV is a problem on most DVD recorders and capture cards these days, ATI is no exception .. get an MV-remover or TBC (best)

PAL ATI .. most complaint stem from days gone by, back before Theatre and 9000 series cards hit their market. It's fine now.

Windows XP for best experience, though ME/2000/98/etc all work fine.

What a load of ill-informed bollocks!!!

The very early ATI chipset cards had driver problems but that was worldwide, not just in Europe. I understood that ATI customer support in the US was bad but I received excellent service from ATI in Europe on the one occasion I had to contact them. Later cards, particularly Radeon based, just work. Whether this is because the cards are better or if the drivers now work properly, I don't know.

I suppose the main reason for the complaints is that if someone in Europe buys something that doesn't work, he complains. Americans seem satisfied with mediocrity

I use an ATI AIW Radeon 7500, for at least four or more years. Make sure that your systom can handle it and I don't mean bare bones minimum(like mine) Be prepared for a complete OS reinstall. I don't know why, but a clean install is usually needed, it can have conflicts with just about any driver or program that you may already have on your PC. I don't know for sure where I saw a good step by step guide on how install it but you need to find it and follow it.

Maybe you should have stuck to the subject then instead of injecting politics into it.
