  1. Found this at cdfreaks. What's the optimal setting?

Maybe some of you have already noticed, after installing Windows XP SP2 some P2P programs are transferring very slow? One reason for this is that the SP2 sets the TCP-connections to 10 connections max simultaneous.

But there is a solution for this problem. A German programmer called “LvlLord” has made a small program (EvlD4226Patch210a), giving you the opportunity to change the TCP-Connections up to 16.777.214 connections simultaneous. WARNING!! Higher values then 100 are not recommended, because it will make a worm-virus-infection spread very fast!

Below you can read a article from the author himself:

    Event ID 4226 Patcher

    What's this all for?
After almost everybody knows the <<EventID 4226: TCP/IP has reached the security limit imposed on the number of concurrent TCP connect attempts>>, I used a day to create for educational purpose a fix for this argumentative feature.

Unfortunately there exists no REG-key which could easily be set (would be so nice and easy, right? *smile*). The file TCPIP.SYS in the directory C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DRIVERS and C:WINDOWSSERVICEPACKFILESI386 has to be changed (system dependend eventually in C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32DLLCACHE, too).

    Needed things:

Windows XP SP2 (from RC2 upwards) or Windows 2003 Server SP1 beta
    patcher (2.10a)
    a small amount of time
    What's been done:
To say it easy: the before 10 half-open connections are beeing increased to 50 (can be changed with the parameter /L) and the CRC is been corrected. And that's it!

    Comment:
The method described here, should only be used by users, who know how to handle all the described. With the download of the here published program the user know, that changes are made on third party files. For damages in every kind I cannot be hold responsible for. Indeed, tests worked fine here. However, nothing is impossible.
Info: When error occurs, the patcher can change the TCPIP.SYS back to the original!

    Instruction:
Just download the patcher and execute it. It will automatically find the windows directory and ask, if it should increase/decrease. For higher values, please check the help with parameter /?.
After a successful patch, the new TCPIP.SYS will be automatically installed. After that, the computer should be restartet.

Personally I would go back to SP1. Why everyone is just automatically updating to SP2 is beyond me. If you got an install CD with SP2 on it already then there are probably other answers for that specific problem.

Anyone else getting pretty sick of these SP2 problem posts here? I thought most of us had decided that it was bollocks before it was even released

All in all, I've had few problems with SP2. The newer security features are good for new OS users. I installed the P2P fix and it seems to help, although XP protests and warns of dire consequences. (What else is new?)

I like the included pop up blocker.

SP2 is probably better with a clean install of XP. I have a new machine that I'm trying it on for a person that downloads anything that strikes his fancy. Hopefully SP2 will help keep him from screwing up his system so often.

Another of tne of the things I like is being able to get rid of Messenger.

I installed SP2 on three machines. The third being a Fresh install using a Slipstreamed XP with SP2.

I disabled the Security Center services and disabled the firewall. All machines are running without any issues.

The other two have tons of software and games. No issues as of yet.

Aside from Fwall and Security Center... what else does SP2 get you that you haven't already received with regular updates?

  6. Lots of things I think... Off the top of my head, more intellegent wireless networking and Bluetooth stack -- and most system files recompiled to be less susceptible to memory overflow attacks, and DEP for people with Athlon64 and the newest Prescott chips.

It also has a few new security features, I'm suprised you weren't aware of Internet Explorer's new integrated popup blocker. I have SP2 installed with *goes to count installers* 54 programs installed, no issues here.
