  1. I'd like to make a cover for a film I made, and I only have a copy of it on DVD. Everytime I take a screenshot from the dvd using print screen, then paint, it turns out black. Is it possible to take a screenshot from a dvd?

Most software DVD players have a screenshot option. You don't hit printe screen, you go through the actual software. Just read the manual.

If you want to just use print screen you have to open up another video first so that it uses overlay. While its running, open your actual video in another player and then hit print screen. Paste and you'll get video instead of black.

I prefer to use something like VirtualDubMod or dvd2avi->avisynth->VirtualDub to take screen shots. Software players do alot of post processing and its damn hard to pause on the exact frame you want.

  6. You can try using Windows Media Classic Player 6.4.8.2 . There is an option under the 'File' menu to 'Save Image' of a screen which is paused.

    Hope this can help.

PRNTSRN is not available because it does not function in the overlay.

  9. Personally, I like to open the VOBs in DVD2AVI, then arrive to the frame I want to grab, then I hit Printscreen and paste the clipboard image into an image editor of my choice. Lets you get precise without having to fiddle with rewind / ffwd / step functions of dvd player software.

You can use PRNTSRN if you disable your video card hardware acceleration.

Might not be ideal, but try looking at Hypersnap-DX screen snapshot software

This will take a screenshot of virtually anything on your computer, even runninh games that use DirectX. It will snapshot active windows, screens, buttons, etc, etc

I use it for creating my tutorials, hasn't failed yet

yeah I use Power DVD and design custom dvd covers from stills from the dvd, take many stills, as some will be blurry from the motion.. you can get great stills with power dvd, screenshot programs will not capture the double layer.
