  1. hi,
ill really appreciate if someone could help me,im new to this xp thing, basically i want certain user (my son 3yrs.old) in my pc to have restricted access to certain programs i use like Nero,Vegas and display settings etc. but still be able to use some programs of his, like Kids games i installed, Windows paint, etc....hes always fiddling with my pc.
changed his profile to limited user, and also tried the software restriction policy, under administrative tools, but all users are affected by this except myself, and his games wouldnt run either.is there an easier way for this ,maybe a policy template of some sort i dont know thanks in advance.

Right click on a program and go to the security tab. You can go through each of your users and set which abilites they have for this program. For instance, you'd most likely just want to set all of these programs to deny read and execute, or full control. Unless he is logged in under a user with execution rights, he won't be able to run them.

There's all kinds of more complicated ways to set this up with workgroups and stuff, but for just one user that you want to restrict, this is the best way.

Either the exe or a shortcut will work the same. You have to be logged in as someone with administrator rights. Just log in as the administrator and the tab should magically appear.

I just looked back at my earlier post and saw my mistake. Maybe you figured this out already, and its still not showing, but what I meant to say was to right click on the exe or shortcut and go to properties. THEN go to the security tab. Sorry.

Adam...I first saw this post and your answer, and wanted to try this out on some programs that I don't want my daughter to use...

I am always logged in to XP Home with "administrator rights", and I too have no "Security" tab when right clicking on an .exe or a shortcut. I did finally figure out that when I boot into Safe Mode, and log in as Administrator, I have this security tab.

I'm gonna try it this way, and see how it works...

I see what you mean about the groups and stuff...

    Thanks for the tip!

This is one of those Microsoft defaults issues. In Folder Options, on the View tab you need to uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing" to enable the Security tab.

  10. thanks autodidact,

i did that already and works, found it on google as laways...neway thanks.

heres also wat i found, might help someone.

    quote:
NOTE: If your Drive is formatted as FAT32 you WONT have a security TAB!

If your Windows XP Home you may have to set the security settings in safe mode.

OR if you are using Windows XP Pro

If you have Windows XP, and your hard drive is formatted as NTFS, you can set permissions on files so that only users you specify can access them. However, if your Windows XP computer is not part of a Domain on a network, you may notice that there is no Security tab when you right-click a file and choose Properties. For some reason, the default for Windows XP computers that are part of a Domain is to have that visible. For Windows XP computers that are not part of a Domain (they are stand-alone, or part of a workgroup), the default is to have the Security tab hidden.

To reveal the Security tab, open Windows Explorer, and choose Folder Options from the Tools menu. On the View tab, scroll to the bottom of the Advanced Settings and clear (click) the check box next to "Use Simple File Sharing." Click OK to apply the change, and you should now have a Security tab when viewing the properties of a file on an NTFS volume.

    and quote:

    thanks again ..
