  1. I use fmpegX to convert films from my video camera to QT-movs. Everything works fine, but ffmpegX gets the image size wrong: I want to scale the DV resolution (720x576) down to 480x384, which corresponds to the original 5:4 relation, but ffmpeg's MPEG-4 libavc engine doesn't allow it: the resulting .movs always have a width of 525px, whereas the height is correct (384px). This means that the coded film is horizontally slightly larger than the original DV file, which results in ugly broad faces of my friends, girls that look much fatter than they are and so on ... :^)

The same effect appears in other resolutions, too - ffmpeg simply seems to refuse to scale the film correctly.

What's the reason for this? How can I convince ffmpegX to use the original 5:4 relation? BTW, I am using version 0.0.9o.

    Thanks for your help!

(in the video parameters section of the video tab, I always set the "Autosize" to "Unconstrained")

  2. This is a Quicktime Player issue, which applies aspect ratio correction. If you reopen your encoded movie with ffmpegX, you'll see in the info that the size is correct.

  3. Wow, an answer four minutes after the question - I'm impressed... Thanks a lot.
