I think my install on my Dell laptop was probably the exception. It could be that the video memory shared with the motherboard memory drags the resources down and makes it sluggish. Probably the thing to do would be to increase the system memory (256 MB) and try it again.

I would've thought 256MB would be OK. I have slipstreamed SP2 into an original XP install disc and installed this on my laptop, which is a P3-600 with 256MB RAM. It is supposedly designed for Windows NT or 2000 (shows how old it is ) but it seems to be running XP with SP2 OK. A little sluggish at times, but OK. I only use my laptop as a backup for when my desktop at work isn't working (I use a permanent VPN into another location). The dial-up sucks but at least I can stay online if our ADSL falls over.
    If in doubt, Google it.

No you don't need SP1 first. The new service packs take care of everything that you need in one download.

Just go to the Windows Update page and install it from there

It won't do anything to your HD or apps, or anything you have installed, or custom settings.

It does not delete or modify any of your data in any way. It applies fixes to internal routines within windows.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Even though I've had one bad experience with a marginal laptop I would go for it, especially with a new install, and I do intend myself to install it on my main systems. If you don't like it you can easily uninstall it through the "Add/Remove Programs".

I had more problems with SP1 and programs slowing down to a crawl than with SP2. So far I haven't had ney broken apps.

I found a bug in sp2 when i changed my system to an athlon64 that when i click on the user accounts its sometimes gives runtime errors, did a fresh install with sp2 intergrated on a new partition and not even connected to the net and it still gives runtime errors when clicking on the user accounts.

Reinstalled winxpsp1 and no problems at all,i read that this problem happens but just wondering if its athlon64 related as my nforce2 board didnt have this problem with winsp2.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

  22. Ordered mine and couldn't believe it...had it in 3 days flat! Never seen MS respond that fast to ANYTHING.

Doesn't mean I'm ready to install it yet of course but kudos to MS or their shipping dept for once for the speedy turnaround, should this have been a major issue.

I love trying stuff on another computer before putting it on mine
I think it's supposed to be like that probally to compensate for the pro and home versions.
