I got this courtesy of AnandTech.com:
Order Windows XP Service Pack 2 on CD .
Amazing, but true, and it's official, from Microsoft. I went to the link and ordered the upgrade for free, no postage & handling fees, nada. I figured why not. This will definitely help those with slow Internet connections, and they're offering them in a variety of languages over the next few weeks....

Well this should cover just about everything then right? They already offer a free disk for all upgrades to os'es prior to XP. That's pretty cool that they do this, and I will definitely order my copy, but I probably won't install it until more fixes come in. SP1 was smooth but SP2 looks a little rocky. I actually got a warning from my isp NOT to install SP2.

So far I haven't had any problems with SP2, but I've also heard of problems. I guess it's inevitable...

Waiting on the SP3 Beta.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
Ditto. I'm not in any hurry to install SP2.

this bothers me slightly, why are micro$oft giving away free cd's, ?? the major thing is it actually states on the www site that you should pass this cd around to as many family and friends as possible, another attempt to enslave the world??? lol
-
There doing this for many reason's. There are so many people with hack copie's of XP. That alot of them there up date's do not work. There letting every one upgrade now. There are to many hole's in XP. It's just better for even one to be patched now so other computer's do not get sick.

From what I've heard, you can only install SP2 on legit copies of windows. So why wouldn't Microsoft want people to pass the CD around?

thats kind of ambiguous -- in other words - they DID block a few keys , but not many (maybe)
not that i really care as
1. not going to install it
2. don't have any pirated copies of xp"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
Let's just say it works on my copy of XP and leave it at that
-
I ordered mine, heck its free. so what the hay?
Do we need Service Pack 1 before we install it or does it already have SP1 with it? -
you don't need sp1

I dunno is it just me or what, call me paranoid, but if Microsoft states something like this
We expect that nearly all Windows XP users, running genuine or pirated Windows, will have access to the security technologies in SP2
I would first cut all the phone and cable wires at home, blow up Wi-Fi router, barricade my house, maybe even cut the power in the house too and just run the comp on a UPS during installation of this SP2... and still would be praying for no legit m$oft trojans...
BUT
thx god I dont have any WInXP version, neither original nor pirated at home, and Im not planning to move 'forward' from Win2K for as long as M$oft supports it. I will worry when they stop supporting it -
What M$ was saying is that there were so many XP systems (legit and otherwise) that were getting infected / compromised, they couldn't afford to let all the problems go unpatched.

you can download SP2 here (266 MB) -
I think the CD is for people who don't have a fast enough connection to reasonably download 266MB.

What would a legit trojan be?
Wouldn't anything that hurts your puter be illegal? -

sp2 does not suck. I am using it on two computers with no problems at all.

I think this is only good if you have XP already. It won't upgrade from like 98 or the like.
RogThere are many ways to measure success. You just have to find your own yardstick.
