Hosting

My host is giving me problems at the moment, and I have some work that needs to be done. I think I want to host a web site off from my PC for a little while, but I have a few questions. :P

1) What programs have you guys used, and how was your experience with them?

2) Are there any programs similar to cPanel that you know of, I've gotten quite attached to it. :P

3) Should I assume that CGI will be supported, or is that difficult to set up?

4) I have my own domain name, will I have to wait for it to resolve before I can start working?

5) I am thinking that it would be a good idea to do all of this on another partition of my hard disk, would that be a good idea or am I just being stupid? :P

6) Would this be a bad idea, would it put any unnecessary wear and tear on my computer?

Probably fairly noobish questions, but my host is giving me alot of "Internal Server Errors." Thanks for any help.
