  1. Well, Ive gotten pretty good at converting and putting files on my dvd-rw's. But I just now figured out that I could be putting all my movie files on the cheap cd's that I have tons of lying around.
My question is, if people can put stuff on VCD's that can be viewed on normal dvd players, what would be the advantage to using an expensive dvd, over a cheap cd?

5.5 vcd=1 dvd.If the vcd`s are 600mb or less then you can fit 7+ on one dvd,1000 vcd lying around compared to 150 dvds plus only geting up every 7 hours to change the dvd compared to every hour for vcd and no breaks in movies.
    I think,therefore i am a hamster.

If you already have a pile of VCD files on your drive, or your source is low quality, DVD is a much more economical way to store it. If you want to preserve a quality source, DVD can take much higher quality than CD

...and the DVD Video standard allows for much higher video and audio quality than VCD, + much more advanced navigation system.
It's like: "Why print the picture on a A2 Glossy Photo paper, when I can print it on the cheap A4 Copier paper I've got?"

With DVD you get the flexibility of multiple audio streams and much much higher quality video just to name 2 benefits.

If VCD is fine for you then stick with it.

For me it's a no-brainer. DVD all the way.
    If in doubt, Google it.

    Hello,

Yes, DVD is preffered. Just the shear storage space alone is reason enough to switch. Also, if you have or get a capture card you can get excellent quality at dvd settings.

  7. Aaaah, I see. I didnt know that the storage space was that different between the 2. Just to make sure, on my dvd-r's 4.7 I can fit about 9 episodes of anime which are about 175mb's a pop. Is this normal? Or can I fit even more doing something else? Because when I tried to do a movie that I dl'ed it took 2 dvds which is something I dont want to do =(

You should be able to fit 25 episodes on one DVD (4.38GB/175MB) minus some for overhead.

  9. I am going to go out and a limb and speculate that the 175MB MPEG1 files were auto converted to MPEG2 which increased the file size hence allowing only 9 episodes to fit...just a thought
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.
