ok i know an avi can be converted to 720x480 mpeg1 48hz(vcd). Which is dvd compliant. What i was wondering is...

can i convert avi to mpeg2(svcd) and have the resolution at 720x480? i know that svcd is 480x480. but is it limited to that resolution? i would like better quality but if picture is same length and width, it really distorts it making it look awkward.

Click the DVD button under "WHAT IS" in the left-hand menu of this site. You should find what you are looking for.

ok thanks. i also want to ask another question here, i dont want to waste on another topic, since it might be a dumb question.

I have vcds.... i understand on disk they are DAT files. i want to turn them back to mpeg1 and change the audio to 48hz so i can store them on dvd media.

what is the best way to do that?

Use VCDGear to extract the mpg from the VCD. To "store them on DVD media", you just burn the mpg as data, but if you want to create a DVD Video from the VCD mpegs, the smoothest way is to use TMPGEnc DVD Author, that takes VCD mpegs as source, and resamples the audio to 48 kHz automagically for you.

    MPEG-1 @ 352 X 240 is VCD & DVD compliant. MPEG-1 @ 720 X 480 is not compliant with any standard.

You can convert to any of the resolutions listed under What is DVD so yes. All you need to do is select an appropriate bitrate.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. What I do is use ISOBUSTER to rip the DAT files to MPEG, then pull them into DVD-Lab and create a DVD-VCD from them.

Check out the GUIDES section for specifics.

I quote myself... You wrote that you wanted to store it on DVD media - That's not the same as creating a DVD Video... - even if I suspected that creating a DVD Videao was what you meant, and adressed that too.
