  1. About how much hard drive space is needed to capture a 2hr movie to DV at 720x480?

DV is 13 GB per hour, so 26 GB required.

  3. Would it be a lot better if I used a 10,000 RPM hard dirve then a 7200 RPM drive? Or does it really matter?

    DV is ~3.7 Mb/sec
A 4200rpm (laptop) drive is sufficent for DV transfers. Any drive these days with the capacity to handle 2 hours of DV will "transfer" via your firewire with no difficulity.

  5. Don't forget though, if you are planning on editing these videos, you will need to have enough space for the 2 hour DV file, plus the 2 hour exported file, plus enough free room for the swap file. Which means you'd need AT LEAST 60gb of free space.

  6. Would have USB drive be ok for the capturing and editing?

Capturing implies some sort of analog to digital conversion, like from VHS or TV broadcast. Since you are really only transfering digital data (like holistic said) I would think a USB 2.0 drive would be fine.

Unless you use frameserving which would save you the space you need for editing the AVIs.

Good call. This is the primary reason that frame-serving is used.
