ok i'm trying to get three hours worth of vhs on my computer and then on to a dvd. the dvd only holds 4.4 or something like that and after testing a few recordings with my ads tech instant dvd+dv the one that will fit without compression is 3mb/second. the final size would be somewhere around 4gb so i have some room to spare and if i go to 3.5mb/second and its about 4.7gb so i wanted to know if you can go in to the custom settings under the video format option and enter a size of your choice, like in my case i want to find something between 3mb/second and 3.5mb/second so i can fit 3 hours in the best possible quality on my dvd. oh and i have already made the audio 192kbs, so who can help me?

Drop the frame size from full frame (720 x 576 if PAL or 720 x 480 if NTSC) to half D1 which is 352 x 576 or 352 x 480. That way you can reduce the bitrate down to 3 Mbs and keep the quality at an equivalent to full frame at 6 Mbs. Using this framesize you lose very little quality. Every other horizontal pixel is lost but this will only make the picture look slightly soft. As your original source is VHS, you probably won't notice any loss in quality as there wasn't much there in the first place!
