Look at your taskbar, how many applications are running in the background? If you purchased a computer from the usual suspects (Compaq, HP, Dell, Etc.) there are probably all kinds of 'Features' running. I would suggest you download a program called "End It All", I think it is on the PC Magazine site. If you Google "End It All" you will probably find it and it's free. It will shut down all of the unnecessary applications, you will have to experiment with what can be shut down, you may even crash your computer. But the beauty is, a reboot will return everything to normal (MSCONFIG settings won't do this). I use this before I begin capturing and I drop '0' frames at High DVD quality on a 1.8 P4. Based on your description, you should have no problems capturing.
If it works, don't fix it.
