  1. everytime i try to open an mpeg file with tmpgenc, it crashes (that is, explorer error). i do have an mpeg-2 decoder (cyberlink's), and it's listed in the "environmental settings" of tmp.

  2. Can Windows Media Player 2 play the MPG? If it can, play your MPG and whilst it is playing, start TMPGenc, once your encoding has begun, close Windows Media Player 2. Works on VOB files too on my system.

    Sounds like bad/conflicting codecs. Run Showshifter trial. When run, this will automatically scan system for bad/conflicting codecs and disable them.
