After a fresh install of WinXP Professional with SP2 (P4 2.0ghz/512MB Ram), I noticed some things I've been working on are no longer working.
Even before and after installing the few codecs I use (stinky's mpeg-2, mJPEG codec), videos recorded in WinDVD Recorder are no longer working. There is audio, but no video, no matter what I do. The videos converted to mJPEG after Adobe Premier 6.0 altering, load but sit there, no audio, no video, no scrollbar movement.
Also, even with newest video drivers (nVidia GeForce2/64MB), Adobe Premier will NOT work in full color, on any resolution. The video file, when trying to play, gets extremely choppy, audio desyncs, after only about a second. It WILL work on high-color, though.
I've triple-checked everything I've done, and these things have always worked correctly for me before. Does anyone know what's going on? I can deal with Premier in high-color settings, but I can't deal with the completed video files that were working YESTERDAY no longer playing.

Check your DirectX (test and/or reinstall), reapply video driver (color issues indicate that your video driver is limping). You may be missing some of the video filters you had before (try codec pack - different this time, uninstall yours and put K-lite for example). Do not keep 2 codec packs installed.

No good. I installed WinXP Pro w/ SP2 on my laptop and got the same exact results. It appears SP2 has alot of codec problems within Windows Media Player 9.
Is there a way to go back to WMP8? -
this is not news

How exactly is it not news? SP2 doesn't work with 90% of the codecs out there, especially the best ones used for video editing. mJPEG no longer works, and MPEG2 no longer works with Windows Media Player, no matter if a codec is installed or not.

SP2 has caused the shit to hit the fan ever since it got released. It was predicted that it would modify the OS in a MAJOR way and so it did. Can winxp system restore take you back to restore windows to the way it was before SP2 was unleashed?
So far, here are the problems I have heard of so far with SP2
-- Codec problems
-- Video filter problems
-- p2p software(BT, DC, sometimes Kazaa) stops working correctly.
-- general programs malfunction
My guess is SP2 was rushed out(yet AGAIN) and now they will release tons of patches for it.A bird in the hand is worth a foot in the tush-Kelly Bundy -
SP2 has uninstall (you can use System restore) but my experience is that it is never 100%. Try it, unistall SP2 and if needed reinstall your winXP to repair what was missed. That is a huge pain...

Thats why im not going to even bother with SP2....my system works just fine with SP1. My rules of thumb is to never bother with software when they are just released, I usually either wait several months or about a year for them to fix all the leaky pipes before I would even consider it.

3. 90% of the video codec is a number you pulled out of a hat i guess as we have had only a few problems with most of any of the 30 or 40 codecs we use (on a test system - but not deploying sp2 yet anyway on 100's of pcs untill further testing) -- have had some problems yes with some codecs ...
this was beta tested for a year -- and by many companies also , to test thier products with it .. i am rather suprised some of these problems only show up now .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I have the same problem.
Fresh re-install of WinXP and SP2.
No Audio in any Mpeg1 Videos.
Only program that plays them back with audio is Powerdvd.
So what is going on?
Windows Media Player tries to download Codec when I open the media file, but it gets an error.
UPDATE: I uninstalled sp2 (restore point was turned on)
Re-installed it and now I have audio in my mpg1 videos.
