I'm particualrly impressed with the 2 10 ton jacks to lift the 50 lb. block of cement.

  9. It was the easiest way I could think of to hold the lintel in place. Hardly any load required but it was a lot easier to jack it up than jam wedges underneath. Also meant I could cement the lintle in unhindered.

  11. I don't have a picture at the moment but here is my setup:

DVD Player: Pioneer DV-K301C. It is very nice and have had it for over 4 years now. It has 3-disk carousel, plays all regions, NTSC or PAL and senses voltage automatically. Purchased it in UAE.
VCR: Sony. Forgot the model but again is 6-head multi-system. Have had it for over 10 years now. Purchased it in Sydney.
Receiver/Amp: Onkyo TX-DS747, 100W RMS front, 50W RMS Rear and Center. Does not have DTS. Purchased it in UAE.
Speakers: Bose Acoutimass AM-10. Purchased it with the Amp in UAE. Have been very satisfied with these. Size was the main consideration.
TV: LG Flatron 29 inches. Purchased 3 years ago in India. But will soon be going in for an HD rear-projection model soon – maybe 52 inches.

    Regards

    Nice work Craig

Wow, you guys have some thick walls there. If we did that here, the backside of that TV niche would be protruding into the next room ..or outside :P

Beautiful job ...very professional-looking work 8)

  13. Thanks cap, its only that thick because it used to be an external wall. It is now internal because the house has been extended. Generally internal walls would be single skin blockwork or stud wall and plasterboard, which would have meant I could not of done what I have. External walls here are pretty much all twin skin with a cavity.

    Ahhh, that explains it

Have you had any formal training in doing that sort of work, or did you just wing it like I usually do?

  15. No formal training, just had a crack at it. This is my first hole in the wall
I will always have a go at things myself, being educated as mechanical engineer helps and working at a university there is always someone with the knowlege I am after if I need any advise.

Craig, what model philips is that TV? It looks exactly like the one I am getting ready to purchase. I took your advice and decided to go with Philips BTW.

  17. Its not a phillips its a relysis. Would have preferred to go with a phillips obviously but they were just too much money. Its only a bedroom TV after all. And I am very pleased with this one - so far.

Where did power come from? I only saw a hole in the wall, then the power magically appeared. I just figured running the wires through that wall would have been a bitch.

  25. The cables are chased into the outer skin wall plaster from floor level, through a hole I drilled in the outer skin then fished up inside the cavity.

    Here is a sketch

  26. ok, that works, good job, very professional

  27. why not just drill the hole in the cavity space?
Why go through the inner block(?) wall?
