Hey all
I'm fairly new (last 2 months) to all these movies and formats and I've had nothing but failure after failure getting anything to work.
Nonetheless, I have been using VirtualDub - currently the most recent version, but have used all available versions. Currently the issue is that I make the settings to convert an .avi and I can see it using the Preview function but when I actually tell it to save it as an .avi with the settings .... it just sits at zero frames processed. It never goes past that. I have a movie going now ... 5h45m so far and it has yet to get past zero.
Any suggestions. I also tried another/and this movie in TMPGEnc and it take a good 9 hours to complete but then just shows 100% done and appears complete, but never burned, but looking in the log there was an error at the very end of the file and just failed - never warned, anything of the sort.
I'm about to give up on this whole process .....

Well I'm 98% THROUGH with xVCD and so on. I finally went and shut off VirtualDub ..... it was at 17hours 46minutes and still at zero ..... No matter what app I use, no matter what movie, seemingly of course only a .avi it fails like this, never get anywhere.
Is there a way to look at an .avi and know what it was encoded with ? To know if it is DivX, just an ".avi" etc ...
I'm gonna work with an already existing MPG for a while until I get some better hints ...
Any suggestions as to this VirtualDub deal ? OR with the TMPGEnc thing mentioned in my first post above ?
Response would be SO appreciated -
Hi!
What are you trying to acheive? You do not mention what you want to do.
Assuming you want to convert .avi to .mpg, I have been successful using Tmpgenc. It's pretty straight forward.
But for us to be able to help you, you must be more specific. I'm a newbie as well, but the people here are pretty well versed in the digitalvideo field -
Yes, in essence I have a dozen or so movies -- DVD Rips and the like -- from 'friends' and on my own .... I want to make VCD, SVCD, etc ... so yes, I'm using VirtualDub and/or TMPGEnc to make into the appropriate .avi or .mpg each makes. I then intend to take that and use Nero (preferably) and make into said xVCD, etc.
All the apps I use to convert my AVI files into SVCD on the fly (such as Nero does) or into mpg and an intermediary step all fail in one way or the other. For example, the just hanging at 0 frames/percent with VirtualDub, or TMPGEnc not burning and the log showing some error in hte last few lines of data .... etc etc. All in all, I've not gotten an avi to encode to a xVCD.
So, I'm looking for "suggestions" on how things should be best done, why my current ways are failing, any thoughts on my shown problems that might help ... I've looked through all the FAQ's and guides here and basicaly follwed them to the 'T' and still ... it don't work.
Sorry if I'm overbearing or rude, I'm new to these and not sure what is goig on. I've literally been trying for 2+ months with no real success.
Anyhow, hope that helps

Trauma, 2 things you could try is to:
1) Download "DivxFix" and run the error checker to see if it's able to find any errors in the avi.
2) Play the avi in Virtualdub and see if it reports any error near the end of the file.
It could also be a codec problem, go to http://www.divx-digest.com and download the nimo codec pack. -
I get that error in the end of the file with virtual dub. What is that? does that matter? cus I have a file that seems correct..

Yea, I've scanned and rebuilt the index of the avi's, etc. I've gotten and used all the codecs available to no avail. I am just really confused and stumped. No new news as of yet, I'm gonna work on it some more. I wish there was a solid all-in-one tool ... well what my mind considers such. Any other good guides on how-to's ? Other than those here ? Read those already.
