Hello all, I’ve been reading through the archive but haven’t found anything specifically dealing with my problem (although perhaps I’ve not looked in the right place either). This is my first post, I hope I included all the necessary info.

My computers are a Fujitsu P5020D laptop (1 Gig processor, 1 GB RAM, XPPro) and a Dell desktop (PIII 800 mHz processor, 768 MB RAM, XPPro). I've got DVDShrink, Nero 6.0 Ultra, IFOEdit, and TMPGEnc (trial version), and I've tried mixing and matching the various programs, with no luck with my problem. I mainly use the laptop as it is much faster. My burner is a TDK 8x DVD +/- R/RW (model 880N, I believe). I have tried burning at the lowest settings (usually no more than 4x anyway). I have not had any problems burning anything else, other than what I mention here.

My problem is, I have been backing up 4 of my DVDs, or trying to, but for #3 of the 4 I keep getting this message:

“DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
    Failed to write file “X:\TEMP\VIDEO_TS\VTS_01_1.VOB
The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.”

I have tried multiple times, on both my different computers, to back up the entire disc. I’ve rebooted, and reinstalled DVD Shrink; I’ve tried backing up directly to the disc in the burner, and I’ve tried backing up to a folder on the HDD (and then would have tried to burn the image to the disc). I did have some success with re-authoring the DVD, in that I was able to rip the main tracks and burn them to a disc. However, I want to back the whole thing up. The other three DVDs I did not have this problem with, so I am not sure why I am having it with the 3rd of the 4.

I *did* encounter this one other time, with one of the discs in another set I have, but when I changed it from backing up straight to the burner to first the HDD then sending that to the burner it worked fine. I didn’t really know why that worked, but I’m still new at this so I figured as long as it worked..... Anyway, I’m really stumped now, hoping to get some advice or help. Thanks in advance!

  2. Try ripping the DVD to your hard drive using smartRipper or DVD Decrypter then run DVDshrink.

Why would one of those work over DVDShrink? Different programming or something, they just do it differently? I'm no programmer, obviously.

I'll look into that - any other thoughts though would be great. I really like DVDShrink so far, very easy to use (probably why I like it so much).

  4. Sometimes DVDShrink has a problem ripping, check the disc for fingerprints or scratches.

  5. nathanaa,
Both times I have got the "I/O error w/ Shrink it was due to a faulty disk. No amount of cleaning helped and Decrypter timed out also. Sometimes a cleaning may make all the difference. I always clean before reading.
Sometimes they are just damaged beyond having the capacity to be read.
Some companies and some programs make claims but I think if the info is lost due to damage it would be hard to restore something not there.
    Another source was my solution.
    Good luck...NL

Well, I'm still having the problem. I haven't been able to try working on this for a couple weeks. I downloaded DVDDecrypter and ran the disk through that - no problems.

Then when I tried backing it up to the DVD burner it told me the file was too big. So, I tried to use DVDShrink to go from the HDD file to the burner and now I get a different message. This may not be exact, as I kept forgetting to write it down.

"DVDShrink has encountered an error. Programming exception"

Something like that. Anyway, I'll try cleaning the disc ONE MORE TIME and see if that won't work. I don't know anyone else who has this series, so I don't think I can find a different source, unfortunately. Anyone out there have season one of Six Feet Under disc 3? I'm going nuts trying to back this thing up.
