  1. I have a few divx files that i want to convert/burn to dvd. I am aware of the bitrate calculator but not sure what would be the minimum you would want to go for an average bitrate to get near dvd or svcd quality. I have an older bigscreen television and afraid of going too low because of pixelation. SVCDs look fine on the tv btw. With 2 divx files it looks like an average of 2607 can be done. It looks like if i put anymore it will drop below 2000.

Assuming that your sources are good quality divx, and that you encode with CBR (constant bitrate) I recommend the following minimums for the three DVD resolutions:

    352x240/288 - 1200 kbps
    352x480/576 - 2200 kbps
    720x480/576 - 3500 kbps

More is better as you can't have too much bitrate, although beyond a certain point it won't make a noticable difference and only wastes space.

You really need to test and find your own tolerance, however.
