  1. I have two existing VOB's that I am adding to my home video. This is the process I am currently using:

    1) Convert the 2 vob's to .avi using VirtualdubMod.
    2) Import .avis into TMPGEnc and convert to m2v.
    3) Transfer home video and convert to m2v using TMPGEnc.
    4) Use virtualDub to demux --->wav
    5) Use ffmpeg to convert from wav to ac3
    6) Use TMPGEnc DVD Author to author everything.
    7) Nero to burn

Does anyone see any potential way I could lose any picture/sound quality with the way I'm putting my dvd together? Or, are there any redundant steps in my process? The output seems to be ok, but after looking at video on your monitor and tv for so long at one sitting, it all starts to look the same.

I would eliminate Step 1 and frameserve with DVD2AVI, then import the D2V file into TMPGEnc Plus. This can also demux which eliminates step 4.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. Doesn't Tmpgenc DVD Author import .VOB files?

I think it imports from IFOs, so you could create IFOs using IFOEdit then import I guess.

I don't think it can import directly from VOBs.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. Use Tmpgenc (MPEG tools), and demultplex the VOB files to M2V and whatever audio format it has..., then import into TDA.

  6. this is the type of input I was hoping for. I don't think my method is the most efficient way, but the end result, long as it may be, turns out fairly well. I am just hoping to cut out anything I am doing that I dont need to be, and hopefully, come up with a fast, consistent method. Thanks for all the great input.

You are losing quality by re-encoding a video that
is already encoded, and taking lots more time.

TDA will take VOBs directly. I just did it.

TDA does accept VOB's using the Add File button, I just tried it. If you have an entire DVD then you can use the Add DVD Video button.

Edit: Foo beat me to it.

If the VOB's are different types (NTSC, PAL, resolutions etc.) then you must add them as seperate tracks.

  11. yes, and I think this is where I ran into some difficulty with the way I was setting up my DVD. I have two intros that play when the dvd is inserted. No menu. I think on seperate tracks, it wouldn't auto play the two intros before jumping into the movie. Maybe I just didn't play around with it long enough though /shrug

Why are you converting your vobs to avis, to edit them?? If so that works. A suggestion that I could give would be to use demux to demux your audio files. Its a commmand line tool but is very easy to use, just go to start, run, and type cmd. Then type cd C:\.... to your directory. Then type demux.exe. This will get you started. You can find demux at http://www.geocities.com/ted_rossin/tools/Video/Video.html
Its alot faster than vdub for audio extration.

I might be way outta left field, but I think he is converting VOB to AVI because he didn't know about frameserving.
    If in doubt, Google it.
