  1. I am using the all in wonder 9600 card to capture video from the vcr. It seems i am having trouble with the video jumping a little bit but there is a white line that creeps in the picture about 1/8th of the way down the screen. It happens on about 80 percent of the tapes i have tried? Has anyone else ever had this problem?

Hmmmm your post sounds just like the one I made about 8 months ago. I tried everthing to fix it. The only solution that I know of that should is a VCR with a TBC or standalone TBC, both of which are over $300. I haven't tried either as my computer vendor replaced my card with another brand. Unfortunatley that one had similar problems. I was able to fix it using a Sima GoDVD model CT-2, might want to give it try there not really expensive. There's others video stabilizers/enhancers that may work as well.

It's a long shot but have you tried the newest drivers from ATI? It's possible they have resolved the problem since I had it.

Try the tech support but I wouldn't hold my breath. If you get a reply please share it as I would love to hear what they have to say.

As for different drivers you need to use the ones from ATI. If you read my article you will have read that I tried everthing short of additional video hardware. There's a hack available but I found that it had no affect on the 9800.

One of the ways that I get around this problem is to use the Monitor Output from my Home Theater(large screen TV) effectively removes the MV and provides a clean signal into the video capture card.

  6. Is there any other devices (preferably cheap) that i could run through, like the moniter idea, to eliminate the fake macrovision?

  7. I use the device found here...

...to effectively mask Macrovision when recording from VHS to either a VCR or standalone DVD recorder. It's relatively cheap and does the job for me.

    EDIT---

Sorry. I just re-read the post and my answer. This device probably won't work as you're really not trying to eliminate Macrovision. You probably need something to boost the poor video signal so that the capture card's "fake" Macrovision doesn't kick in. The device is still a good product for what it's supposed to be used for, though.

    .
Don't know if they work for the ATI though. If you have store near you with a liberal return policy you might want to give it try. Sima makes some other products that start around $40 or $50.

  9. Have a similar problem with a 9000AIW and, like you, this is one of my primary reasons for buying a new computer.

I haven't sprung for a TBC yet but probably will. Some people run the signal from the VCR to a DV or Digital 8 camcorder and then run it out the firewire to the computer. Experts don't like this method but you might try if you have one available. You might post a captured picture of the problem and see if someone like lordsmurf will comment on whether they think a TBC will help.

    Good luck

This sounds like tracking or timing error, not an MV or false MV problem.

Which is the same advice you gave me 8 months ago which frankly is "baloney" to use one of your phrases from another post. It's the cables, it's the VCR, it's whatever but it's never the card.

What he describes is exactly the results that I was getting as are many others. As my article clearly states and shows with video examples the problem does not occur on a cheap crap capture card where there is no MV detection. Plain and simple.

Edit- BTW I was just looking over the RAGE3d forumns the other day and apparently the MV goes beyond this problem. The 9800 also has problems displaying commercial videos with MV at all even when your just trying to view the movie. When viewing a MV protected movie it will produce horizontal banding which is very prominent on lighter areas of a video.
