Hello. I have an AVI that uses this codec (data from GSpot):

    4CC: wmv3
    Name: <unknown>

It says I have 2 compatible codecs installed and they are:

    Microsoft Windows Media Video 9
    WMVideo Decoder DMO

The strange thing is, I don't remember downloading those things. The only codec I have installed is FFDSHOW. I remember the owner saying not to use FFDSHOW to decode the AVI but here, it works just fine for me. That's weird. Just wanted to know why.

Those are probably the ones built into the operating system (OS). You will find quite a few from MS especially, even before you install any others.

One that is not from MS is the MPEG2 codec. You have to install that yourself, apparently because of copyright issues. It's nice to know the MS is not all powerful in everything.

If its "AVI" then its not a WMV codec, probably the hacked DivX 3.11 alpha

The WMV codec range is only used in WMV formats or ASF, AVI's are probably 3.11 Alpha

    Signature removed.
