I hope this is OK topic to post in!?

I've noticed a lot of discussion about resolutions & aspect ratios etc...

    So now I am confused.

    I have been capturing at 720x576 and 720x480...then resizing & encoding to 352x576 & 352x480.

But should I be cropping 8 pixels off the sides of my captures first to bring it to 704x???...

I noticed in KDVD forum that some guy has success capturing at 704x576, resizing to 352x576 & filtering, and resizing again to 704x576...or something...strange stuff.

If it's true that I should be cropping 8 pixels off the sides of my 720x576 captures, why not just capture at 704x576 then downsize to 352x576???

I think a guide is well & truly needed here. I've read so much guides, but...???

    Thanks!

(BTW I am using Winfast capture card, I believe different cards matter here)...

I guess your all asking, Well am I happy with my results? The answer is Yes.

But that's not my point. I want to know what is the PERFECT way to do this.

    There's too many variables...eg 768? 720? 704? 368? 352?

What is the BEST capture res?

What is the BEST resize res? etc...

While you're at it, give me your best avisynth script hee!!

  3. I don't think there is a perfect way to do this. Most, if not all people will tell you to resize to different resolutions, crop, or trimm and use this and that aspect ratio, but most people don't truely know themselves.

If your encode looks fine doing it the way your doing don't lose any sleep over it, and keep doing it the way your doing. There is just too many combinations, and too many different answers. In the end you just need to come up with a method that works good for you.

Just a quick question why do you want to downsize your resolution?

    Thanks for reply, Chobo.

Yes I'll try not to lose any sleep over it. I've just noticed recently some of the long-term members here expressing confusion over this issue, too...?

I have made lots of capturing/encoding tests, and I seem to hit the best results by capturing Full D1 and resizing with avisynth (lanczos4resize) to Half D1, then feeding it into TMPGEnc. I can not tell any difference from keeping it Full D1. If anything, downsizing seems to sharpen the image! (I should mention I'm coming from VHS).

By using Half D1, I can keep the LPCM soundtrack & fit it to DVD-R, no probs. No messing around with buggy AC3 converters etc.

Also I don't see any "skewing" or warping of aspect ration by going direct from 720 to 352...but that's not to say there isn't a slight warping...just that it's not noticeable to me.

I've been using the fabulous Fulci Method

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=225951

It provided the stepping-stone I needed to plunge into Avisynth scripts... Great stuff!

Read that "amazing discoveries" thread that went around months ago. There's lots of good info (and pictures) in there regarding capture resolutions.

I think some people are overly anal about it to be honest.

I too have capped VHS at 720 X 576 then resized to 352 X 576 using AVISynth and not had any problems.

If your DVD player can play PAL, you might consider using high bitrate MP2 audio ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Do you mean that long long thread with Trevlac et al, about capture card anomalies & resolutions etc?

Yes I think you could be right.
