Does changing the bitrate on a standalone recorder, between XP and SP recording to DVD-R, hurt compatibility with burners or standalone players?

It shouldn't .... the Standalone burners will no doubt keep certain minimums and maximums and resolutions into account when burning its disks. I'm certain they will not go below the defined 2k bitrate. You shoud be ok.
