DVD+R not playing on one of my two home players

Hello,
I am a newbee in creating my own dvd. I have read many previous posts on this subject but cant understand how a dvd can not be compatible with all dvd players. I am using many tools. All seem to produce the same results. I can play them fine on my pc no matter how i do it but not on one of my home players.
I am using the latest nero and HP400i writer with Memorex dvd+r.
The home player that does not work is an apex 1100. The result is that it knows its a dvd but does not play the fist movie. It does display the menu.
I read a lot of discussion that the problem may lie in the media itself.

Hello,
I'm glad you did some reading first. Yes, trying different blanks will be a good place to start. The other is the format of the video. Is it dvd compliant? Use gspot and post the results. Also, you may want to burn at a lower speed. That helps sometimes for cdr's and may be true of dvd-rs' (though I personally haven't noticed it, you may want to try it).

Also, copy the disc to a rewritable and see if it plays then. (and check the brand as well).

I was trying with re-writables at first to save the buck a pop on non working dvd+r with the same affect. I check the dvd-playsers page and there are no bad plays with my brand of media memorex-4x.
I did run the gspot prog and it stated all was ok.
My frustrations is that how can it play in one machine and not the other. both home units have the same specks.
I did read a discussion on ritek vs. prodisk media.
is this a more compliant brand of blanks? this sounds crazy to me.
How are you sure that the dvd is compatible. Is there any real foolproof way to test either before or after?

Unfortunately the only 100% guarantee for a compatible dvd is to have a manufacturer commercially press it for you like the real movies (EXPENSIVE!).

When you burn home dvds your not using EXACTLY the same process hence the errors people get.

DVD SPEC is: 720x480 resolution (NTSC US AND CANADA). MPEG2 video, 2000 video bitrate and up (maybe 3000 up). Audio 48000 hz.

P.S. dvd-r is SLIGHTLY more compatible. Unfortunately I saw that your player is +r compatible. Hopefully a change of media will help. Try name brands like sony or memorex to get a better result (maybe).

My brother has the same player. My regular DVD+R burns did not play in it, so I found a bitsetting tool. Now, all my burns play fine in his APEX. Look for a bitsetting tool or patch for your burner.

So the real trick is finding the right combo of witer , media and software. Not all are created equal.

You say the player displays the menu but won't play the disc. What happens when you click on a link?

When the menu is displayed it just shows the clip. I cant play it of start it. It spins its wheels. I found that the movie does play in my play station2 as well. Just not on my main apex home player.

I am experiencing the same problem with my Apex 3210 (3201?) but only with one media; the Sonic 4x DVD-R from Shop4Tech. all other media ( + - ) from any other vendor plays back fine.

What do you think...I have 98 Sonic blanks left...should I flash my NEC 1300a with Herrie's 1.08 bitsetting firmware upgrade (actually a downgrade) or not? Guess I'm asking whether most of you think this will actually get my Apex to play back my backups. The 2 I have burned will play back in my PC but will freeze after it plays 8 seconds of the intro in the Apex (one actually stops after the Apex reads it as a DVD source). I currently use his v1.0b.

i flashed my nec 1300a and now i can burn on to any media ive used so far,be careful flashing though it could bust ure dvd burner.herries 1.09d is out now if ure flashing becareful though

I used to have the same problem. The first DVDs that I burn with my HP DVD200i wouldn’t play in my Apex DVD player. The problem was a mixture of outdated DVD burner firmware and buggy burning application.

All my problems went away after upgrading the burner's firmware to the latest version and start using TMPGEnc DVD Author writing tool to burn my DVD’s.

Since then, only one older Panasonic DVD player has not been able to play my DVDs. All other players that I have tested, including my Apex, work just fine. Recently I have burned DVD’s using the latest version of Nero 6 and Nero 5.5 and the final DVD have worked properly.

Have you tried updating your firmware to the latest version?

Looks like i have a solution.
I upgraded the firmware on the burner(even thou it was the same that i already had). I also installed the software that shipped with the unit. Arcsoft showbiz dvd. I used the hp utility that was installed that checked for compatiblity (what ever that means). I now have two fully compatible dvds authored

The strange thing is that the AUDIO_TS file was replaced with a ARCSOFT directory that contains strange files and something called the dvd engine.

Next i will try to burn with nero again to see if it was the firm-ware upgrade or the hp compaibilty utility or who knows.
