I'm afraid to buy them just because they say "Made In India" on them. Anyone have any idea who makes these?

Kodak is just a brand. And it is PRODISC.

If somebody can confirm this, I'll add it to my site.

I bought a 100 spindle of the Kodak dvd+R yesterday for $69.99 canadian at Future Shop. They are supposed to be rated 4x according to a small glued on sticker (although the original preprinted packaging shows 8x). My Nec 1300 will only burn these at 2.4x. The media code comes up as "Media id001". I've only burned 2 so far and tried them in my Philips DVP642 and my Apex ad700 they worked ok for cheap media. DVD Identifier shows the tag as:

    ...MEDIA ID001.8 #T7..Jq..f......

I've researched comments on various forums about the media code and it comes come up under different brands (all cheaper) and people have had mixed results. The main difference is that mine have a Kodak logo whereas most comments I found say that the discs with the same id were completely plain with no markings.

Aren't those numbers wrong? 7.82GB/8.40GB would indicate a dual layer disc. I'm wondering how they can be Prodisc if they are made in India? I thought the Prodisc were Taiwanese?

I also purchased a 100 spindle of these Kodaks.
    Dvdinfopro shows them as "ProdiskS03"
I have burnt 10 of these disks error free.
It would seem that my NEC 2500a likes them.
    I bought a second spindle of 100.
At the current price, I couldn't resist.
However, with my luck, the second spindle will have
a different media code and I will be coaster city.

If that happens, take them ALL back, even the ones you burned for a full refund. I found out the hard way that they won't take them back unless the entire spool comes back, including any botched discs. My friend who split the cakebox with be destroyed a couple of the discs when they wouldn't work in his burner, at the same time destroying our chances of a refund. Live and learn...

See this thread over at CDRLabs.com for the complete lowdown on what this media is all about.
    http://www.cdrlabs.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=17377

So far, I have bought and tested the Kodak Media and found 4 different media codes:

    -R
    PRODISC S03
    VANGUARD

    +R
    PRODISC R02
    MEDIA ID001

Do the 25 pack DVD-Rs have the prodisc ID? According to the link above Kodak has nothing to do with this product. This company http://www.kmpmedia.com/ licensed the brand name. That doesn't exactly inspire confidence. But for the current cheap sale price at Futureshop I might give them a try.

Yes you can get the prodiscs in the 25 pack. However most of the -R media is the vangaurd or other.

There is a way to tell what you are getting, and it is easiest to do with the 25 packs, but you need really good eyes.

The desirable discs are the Prodiscs and there a few ways they can be differentiated from the crap.NOTE: this is for -R, but should still appy for the +R:

a.) The Prodisc media has a clear hub(the area around the hole) whereas MOST, but not all, of the crap have a silver hub.

b.) The finish on the Prodisc media is more matte than the rest. So when you look at the kodak writing at the top of the disc, it will be more matte than the shiny Kodak lettering of the crap. This, and c.) below, are the best way to tell, when the media doesn't have the silver hub.

c.) The prodisc media has a serial number stamped into the disk (not ink) and is stamped right around the hole. So if you hold the package up or angle it well to catch the light, you can see the letters and numbers of the serial on the top disc. This is why I mentioned you need good eyes. The crap has an ink serial usually in the silvered area around the hole.

It is easy to eliminate most of the crap just by whether it has the silver hub or not. So, since not all of the crap has a silvered hub, make sure you compare the glossyness of the writing and look for the serial numbers/letters.

This is the only way I have found to ascertain what you are getting, because you certainly can't rely on the packaging.

Also note that the Prodisc stuff is somewhat rare...or atleast it ishere in Ottawa. Today I went to all 4 of the the stores here in town and out of all the packages in all of the stores, there were only 10 which were the Prodiscs. Two packs in one store, 3 in another, 5 in the other, and none in the last. I bought 7 of the 10.

    Happy hunting.

I didn't have really good luck with the +R prodiscs that I got as my LG 4040B didn't seem to like them. They did burn at 4x, but I produced some coasters.

  18. Please add the different media codes you've found of Kodak media to the media list so it will be easier for other people to find out what they are. Currently only the 4x DVD-R ProdiscS03 is listed.

Clearly they are not correct in the country of origin. It wouldn't be the first time.
Still a few bugs in the system...
