  1. Good morning fellas:

I have some AVI files with (say named Movie.Xvid.AC3-6CH.avi) that have video but no audio (I have latest Xvid codecs). I think I do not have some audio codecs but I do not know which. I also have PowerDVD 5.0 that comes with codecs to play AC3 6 channel DVD's, but it is just certain AVI files that do not play audio.

I encoded a movie a while ago with AC3 (both XVid and DivX) but got AVI file without audio (may be there was audio since I chosen AC3 but my PC could not reproduce it) so I had to re-encode in MP3 and it turned out fine.

    Please advise. Thanks.

Try AC3 Filter and use in conjunction with media player classic, it works perfect for me playing divx/xvid files with ac3 streams.

  3. To playback AVI's with AC3 sound through Windows Media Player you need a "Helper" filter for DirectShow, in addition to a AC3 decoder filter. By design, AVI's are not supposed to support AC3 sound. This filter overcomes that.

Media Player Classic has this filter built in, but you can download it separately at; http://www.inmatrix.com/zplayer/formats/ac3.shtml

Its listed under "Gabest AC3/DTS XForm Filter"

Media Player Classic also has a MPEG-2 Decoder and a AC3 Decoder built in.
