  1. Right I only realised this morning while I was going to work. Hopefully someone can shed some light on it so I can fix it when I get home.

Went into the office this morning and the pc was on but the hard drive light was stuck on and there was no output to the monitors. I turned the pc off and on again. Again hard drive light is locked on and there is no outpuit to the monitors. Any ideas ?

There is a strange ticking noise coming from the pc also. If it is my boot drive that is knackered surely the pc should still display an image and boot to the bios.

    Any tips GREATLY received !!!

Someties the light will stay on if the cable is plugged in wrong.

This may or may not be your problem.

  4. I once had the same thing happen to me. Opened up the case and noticed that my cooler had dislodged from the CPU (the little plastic lugs on the CPU socket had broken). Fried the CPU and motherboard. Hopefuly that is not what has happened.

  6. I was just thinking it would be a good excuse to get one of those 3.6ghz badboys. I am sort of hoping it is knackered now !!!.

Does not explain the strange ticking noise though I can hear.

  8. I do not know as I have no picture. I cannot hear any of the drives ticking over.

When I get in from work I will just unplug everything and then add as I go.

One of the drives is clicking so it has probably died.

The ticking could be the dreaded "tick-tock-of-death" owners of mid-'90s vintage WD drives are so familiar with It has happened to me on some reputable drives too. Dead HD :P

Don't think I've heard of hard drive errors preventing POST. Not without digging around and messing with a bunch of hardware. Even if you bent 3 pins, soldered 3 and put the floppy cable on the other 34, you should still get a POST, or beep codes.

Does your PC speaker work? If you're not sure, it's possible that you just may not be hearing the beep codes.

  19. It was the power supply that was knackered. Only 6 months old, Antec True 430W. Going to take two days for a new one to turn up

I am pissed of it was not the chip as I had convinced her to let me get one of the new 3.8mhz ones.

When I want something bigger or better, I just pretend the old one is broke, even if it aint. Then say to HER "Oh hell, my thingy is bust. I will have to pop out and get another."

She aint got a clue what I am talking about so does not question me.

That approach doesn't work with my wife.

I would get busted while using the device that was supposed to be broken.

That's where creative shifting comes in. You just rotate out your oldest compatible part and replace it with your 'bad' part. Then toss (or sell) the old one. Somewhat of a loss but if you really want to upgrade, it'll get you there. :P

I think he was referring to the CPU upgrade.

I have a separate account that I just use for tuition and my wife never knows how much I've got in there. I order stuff and try to intercept it and install it before she sees but I usually get caught. I just tell her that yes, I purchased ANOTHER part for my computer but that it only cost $50. She has no idea.

As far as she's concerned, my 64bit Opteron chip cost $49.95.

    --- That's great... what they don't know won't hurt them ....

My wife is the same way... I normally sneak out to We-Be-Computer and leave it in my truck until an appropriate time to put it in my computer hutch..... I could have a stack of External Hard Drives and my wife wouldn't ask.... hmmm... a terrabyte of storage..

  28. I always try the "no darling I have had that for ages" routine but it never works, she is too damn smart.

However she just got a new job today with a £20k payrise which means I can spend spend spend. I have always wanted some M&K speakers and that ridiculous colour screen Pronto think I may be making a purchase. She wants a new car but I don't drive so I will have to quash that little idea first.
