    Reinstall Xvid.

    Buddha says that, while he may show you the way, only you can truly save yourself, proving once and for all that he's a lazy, fat bastard.

  4. you don't have to have SP2 to get the Divx problem. I don't think its completely related to SP2. I had the exact same problem. Uninstalled Divx codec and just use ffdshow for Divx now (Xvid is still installed) and I haven't had Explorer crash since then.

  5. I had the same problem, it was something to do with Explorer's preview (the little preview window that appears on the left, when you highlight a file). I disabled this using Regedit, but I can't remember where I got the info on how to do this... Try a Google search.

    OK found it on Experts-Exchange...

    go to Start->Run and type

    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll

    now try to view an AVI file and it should not show the preview.

    if you ever want to re-enable it instead type regsvr32 shmedia.dll

  7. Instead of using Explorer open you viewing application then have that program open the file.

  8. That doesn't always work. XP likes to switch your view on you from time to time and evidently even if view is set to thumbnails it will crash explorer. I set mine to details most of the time but Windows frequently switches my view options on me.
