If you post information about the file in you first post you are more likely to receive help faster

Can you tell me what audio the file has (use GSpot or AVICodec) ?

It sounds like you don't have the correct audio codec installed.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. ok, i used gspot, and the audio codec is MPEG-1 Layer 3

i also noticed that when i selected render in gspot, i got an error saying cannot play back audio stream, no audio hardware detected

and i am using the XviD-1.0.1

sounds like your sound card or onboard sound might not be working properly. Can you play any sounds at all ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Take a screen capture of what GSpot tells you and post it here.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Your image was too big. It has to be below 50KB, and in JPEG, GIF or PNG format. Never mind. Judging by the pic you emailed me, it was a good idea you didn't post it

    Anyway ...

Perhaps you could try reinstalling all your codecs ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

    A-HA !

that sounds like your sound card needs to be re-installed, like I said earlier. I was thrown off by the fact you got some sounds to play though. If it was truly your sound card, nothing would play at all.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I don't mean to sound patronising, but we aren't your personal helpdesk, and contrary to popular opinon, can't see your screen from here. The more information you can provide to us, the quicker we can tell you how to fix it. Try putting as much information is your first post as possible - dribs and drabs along the way make it nigh on impossible to accurately figure out what's going on.

Head up, I'm sure you'll fix it in the end.
    If in doubt, Google it.

So it is a PCI soundcard (the plugs are in a separate area on the back of your PC and not in the same section as monitor etc)?

Preferably you should have a driver disc that came with the PC. If not, you need to identify the make and model of it and then try www.driverguide.com.

It still doesn't make any sense though that your MP3s still play - If there was something wrong specifically with the soundcard then no sound would work at all. Can you post a screen dump of the device manager screen ?
    If in doubt, Google it.
