yes service pack 1 does need to be installed first. I would do a complete system backup b/4 installing sp2. or at least backup critical data.

No, you can just install sp2.
Sp2 has all of the updates of sp1 included. -
No problem.
I have installed sp2 on a computer without sp1 so I know what I am talking about. -

The only minor problem I had was with Xolox.
I had to reinstall it.
Other than that, not a problem. -
what do the service packs actually do anyway? ive never gotten them, but i did find this, which kinda gets me concerned about getting it

It beefs up the firewall which is now called windows firewall.
The firewall still does not block outbound information.
There is a security center which monitors your computer and tells you when you need to download antivirus defenition updates and lets you know if you are up to date on your windows updates.
There is a feature called Data Execution Prevention(Dep).
A built in popup blocker for IE6, and a bunch of security fixes..... -
The windows firewall is now turned off by default.
Sp2 has all of the patches of sp1 as well.
It turns programs like messenger by default.
It also has improved wireless support. -
I have SP2 on 2 machines so far and no problems. One already had SP1 and the other was a clean install of XP.
The security add ons can be a little irritating, but I haven't bothered to configure them completely yet. I left the firewall on and it seems to coexist with my router firewall without any major problems.
One thing is nice; You go to Microsoft to see if there are any updates needed and it says no. This probably won't last long, but so far so good.
I used the beta version a month or so ago and I wouldn't recommend it. Go to MS or mirror and get the final release and save yourself some problems. -
I have installed it on 4 computers.
On my two, I turned off the security center.
I do the updates myself. -
