I'm using an ATI Radeon 9800 to capture from VHS/DVD. DVD works fine but not VHS and TV. I have gone through every setting there is (VirtualDub) but it still doesn't seem to work. I can barely see the picture, jumping up and down and sometimes freezes, and it's black and white. Am currently using S-video but have tried composite without any luck. When I play the recorded file using VLC all I get is green. My friend has the same computer/graphics card and it works fine for him to cap from any source.

Sorry for my lazyness... I just read around a little bit more and it seems that my capturing-card has macrovision or some kind of protection. What's the capturing card good for if I can't be able to record VHS/TV. That's the whole point, isn't it?

The whole point of macoision is to keep you from copying. You can purchase a TBC or a "descrambler"at many electronics stores for that purpose. You can get them for as cheap as US$20 (legally).

But the thing is that I can't even copy my own homemade-movies. Anyway, will try and use those ATI MV removers instead. I'm not going to pay any money to be able to use my capturing card to what it's made for.

That sounds alot like a pal/ntsc issue. macrovison acts differently than that.

I also have an ATI cap card. and i can input DTV VHS TV cable etc into the inputs and the mmc tv tuner will allow me to switch between input source and watch/record

Now some/most VHS/DVD sources have macrovision but cable doesnt and my DTV doesnt do that either. so your having another issue.. check your setings, if your in a pal region make sure your card is pal enabled. if not then try different cables and connection options.. IE coax/s-vid/compos.

    GL hope this helps

I installed Ulead VideoStudio that came along with the graphics card and changed the settings in there. Then I went back to my favourite VirtualDub and to my surprise the picture now had no flaws at all, except for it being black and white :/ Anybody might guess what it is? The source is PAL and my settings are set to PAL so there's no format matter i think.
