  1. How can you tell audio options when using DVD Shrink to burn? I usually choose 2 ch over 5 ch since its less MB. But sometimes the 2 ch ends up being commentary so I waste the dvdr and have to reburn again, this time choosing the 5 ch. If it doesnt say "commentary" is there a way you can tell?
    Thanks

  3. dvd sHRINK AUTOMATICALLY burns it right after it analyzes and encodes it....even if you try the preview pane, it still plays it with regular (non-commentary)

  4. The file with the largest size will 9/10 times be the track you want. Just select whether you want dts or dd 5.1 (if your dvd has both soundtracks on it) and off you go.

  5. the reason why I choose 2ch is because it takes less MB than 5.1 ch. I want to try to maximize the compression rate, so I can get better picture quality. Most movies, when I choose 2 ch, I have no problems with. Just some like American Pie, the 2 ch sometimes is commentary. (with 5ch being the ONLY audio option) There isnt a way to use DVD Shrnik to preview the audio before you burn...since it does it right after it analyzes and encodes.

  12. Easy. Before ripping play the film on your PC with a software player. Go to the menu (the software player menu usually a pop up and NOT the DVD's menu) and you will see the audio tracks in a certain order. Go through them one by one to see which is which.

In the great majority of the cases this is the order they will appear on the DVD Shrink list.

Alternatively rip to HD first (say with Decrypter) and then open IFOEdit. That will give you preview capability with which you can do the "listen and count" thing above.
This second method is particularly useful if the DVD you have has PUOs that do not allow you to change audio tracks while watching the film.

  14. Prohibited User Operations (or Options).

(Note: this definition may not be according to the official standards but at least that's what I call them things that for e.g. do not let you chapter jump from a WARNING screen)

If what I called them is confusing to anyone, I apologize.

Yeah, if they can't hear it then why bother giving them all 5 channels right? They won't notice

Actually alot of DVDs include a secondary main audio track mixed in 2.0. Its done because of the problems that are created when you play a 5.1 track on a 2.0 system. The DVD player does the downmix, so right there the quality varies from one machine to the next, and so its safe to say that the studio can probably do a better job then your Apex can. The next problem is that 5.1 mixes have so much more dynamic range then a 2.0 mix. Unless your dvd player has dynamic range compression or some form of normalization option, and you know when and how to use it, a 5.1 track played through a 2.0 system will have very soft audio. If you turn it up to normal viewing ranges then stand back when there's an explosion because you'll likely go deaf.

jyeh74 I can't imagine choosing 2.0 over 5.1 but if that's what you want then just preview the actual DVD first, as others have stated. Keep in mind though that many DVDs won't have a 2.0 track for the main audio at all. 5.1 will be the only one available.

Really? I always thought you just check or uncheck the audio option on the right side of the DVD Shrink menu. I'll have to try that then.
