DVD-Video format is easier and faster to deal with on the computer for editing and re-authoring. Plus, finalized DVD-Video discs are much more compatible with regular DVD players (very few can play back VR format discs). The JVC also gives you the advantage of recording to DVD-RW's, so you won't need to worry about getting a DVD-ROM that can read DVD-RAM discs, either. Finally, the JVC makes a better looking MPEG2 recording than the Panasonics do because of the "DigiPure" video enhancing and noise reduction filtering that occurs prior to encoding.

I have used Panasonics for 3 years and was happy with them until I used the JVC, I'll never go back. The picture is noticably better on the JVC, although a little softer than Panasonic. The JVC also has more options for setup than the Panasonic. One of the biggest advantages for me is the JVC records all usuable space on a DVD-R giving approximately 2hrs 14min in SP, the Panasonic stops at 2hrs with the outside edge of the disc left unused.

On a Panasonic with a Harddrive, if you use the high speed dub option to dub from the HD to a disc, you can use all of the disc space (~2:13 min in SP mode). It treats the disc like a data disc in this type of dub. It works great for putting 3 x 1 hour TV episodes on 1 disc after editing commercials (assuming the edited episodes are ~42-44 minutes).
The limitation to 4 gb of disc space only appears on real time, direct to disc recordings. -
