I just did a fresh install of win xp last night, everything went fine, I then try to install the drivers for my graphics card and a ms dos window pops up. I then try and install something else and another ms dos window pops up.

I cant run any setup or installer .exe files. So I put an update cd in that has autorun and I get this message:

    Windows cannot find setup.exe
this program is needed for opening files of type 'file'.

    any ideas?

The install cd might have been scratched and you are missing some system files?

    Just guessing

    You could try reinstalling.

I realize that is not what you want to hear.

we had that problem on a system that had bad memory ... also sometimes happens on overclocked systems ... also make sure that msi installer is latest version ....

none or all of the above may be your problem of course ...

Try clearing your temp directory and possibly choosing anther temp directory under environment variables. Sometimes things don't get cleared out properly and an installation is accessing the wrong versions of files needed for an install.

Well I formated when I got home and I was about to format again because it didnt work. So I started messing around and eventually found out the problem was with my dvd backup, all the setup files on it were corrupt. Everythings up and running now and I just installed sp2, the security center thing is annoying.

    Turn it off.

    Type in msconfig,

go into services and uncheck security center and reboot.

Or you could go into the control panel, administrative tools, services, security center,
    1. stop the service.2. set it to disable.
    Glad you got it working.
