  1. I just upgraded my LG 4040B with a LG 4081B. Do I just remove the 4040B and install the 4081B ? Or is there a proper procedure to upgrade a burner. I'm thinking perhaps there maybe some registry settings still pointing to the 4040B....

Also should I have went with the 4120B over the 4081B ???

    Thanks

Upgrading your burner is not taxing. Take the case off and undo the screws holding your DVD burner in place. disconnect the 4 pin power cable and the 80 pin IDE cable. Take note of the jumper setting (Master, Slave or CS). Change jumper on ingoing burner to whatever the outgoing one was. Reconnect IDE and power cables and screw in.

    Done !
    If in doubt, Google it.

  3. I know the hardware switch is easy. I've done this many a time before. But I was wondering on how to clean up any references to the old burner in the registry or any support DLLs in the C:\Windows\System32 folder.

    Thanks

The way you worded your first post made it sound like inside the box was foreign territory.

I have upgraded CD and DVD burners over the years and simply pulled one out and plugged the other one in. All optical drives use the generic windows drivers so there is not really anything that you need to clean up in regards to the burner.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  5. My LG4081B must be defective then as it has been generating a few coasters. It even has problems reading other DVDs (burnt or pressed).

I thought it may be something in the registry pointing to the old burner....

Maybe I should exchange it for the LG 4120B model.

If it was burning coasters, it might be bad discs.

I'm certainly no guru, but I've swapped 4 different CD burners and 3 different DVD burners through my machines over the years and never experienced any issues that were registry-based. I have had a few burning software issues though. Some versions wouldn't support the new burner etc etc. I gather your burner's under warranty. It might be an idea if convenient to return it and get the manufacturer to check it out.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. If you're picky you can use a registry cleaner.

But I agree, swap away, the registry doesn't care. the bios might.

    DVDs (burnt or pressed).
A drive that doesn't read good PRESSED disks is clearly a DEFECTIVE drive.

    RMA it!
