  1. I was just doing a little search to see how the pricing is going on DL media. The average rate right now is between $10 and $15 dollars. However, I came across Americal which refuses to drop their price of $21 dollars http://www.americal.com/ct/double%20layer%208.5gb%20dvd%20media.html This has been this way for a while. Do you think anyone is buying these?

I wouldn't buy from meritline even if my life depended on it. I didn't even open the link.

  3. How is $14.25 a piece cheaper?

  4. If you REALLY have to have it, keeping in mind that it is roughly equivalent to 30 single layer DVDs which would allow you to make 15 complete DL copies on 2 discs with no loss in image quality...

    Sony, $10, delivered.

Still a few bugs in the system...

Actually I recently read a study in a journal that researched the ability to find multiple prices on the internet and they found that people were very irrational in their buying and did not take advantage of pricing competition to get the best price. Some buyers did but most didn't. Go figure, it shows how three gas stations can be on the same corner, sell the same product at different prices and still all stay in business.

This is true, I find myself doing the same thing. Like for instance I would never buy from Meritline even if they were giving it away.

Considering that there are many places now to buy this media, I find it hard to believe that anyone would buy from Americal for that price. Then again you have those die hard Americal fans that only buy from them. Like you said, "go figure".

For $21 you could just buy a second copy of the movie! You'd have to be nuts to pay that (or even $10) for a dual layer disc.

Who is buying these things? Generic single layer media is well under a dollar.

You're forgetting the legitimate uses of DVD media. Permanate data backups, home movies, custom slideshows, etc. I'm looking forward to when they get below $2-3 per disc (even if I have to wait awhile). It'll be great for distributing the home movies to relatives... twice the time per disc.

Just for the record, I was talking about DVD Backups - not copying, which is illegal.

While I agree with you, that it would be nice to have the extra hour for home movies, I don't think many people can justify the cost for dual-layer. Two hours of video split over two single layer DVDs. is about $1.50. That same two hours on one dual-layer disc would cost $10-$15.

Same situation with data backup: Since data can be much more easily split than video, dual layer seems pointless for this app as well.

The only area that I can see dual layer having an advantage over single layer is with DVD9 backups. Some people don't like to lose quality when backing up a movie, so they split it to two discs. Occasionally, this can be a pain in the ass.

Dual layer DVDs will be nice to have. But right now I can't see how they could be considered worth the cost. Also, since this is a first gen technology, there will probably be far more compatibility problems than with current single layer.

99% of the DVD recording I do is on my two set-top recorders. When they come out with a dual layer set-top I will buy one because it sucks to only be able to fit 2 hours of decent quality video on a disc. But I'm sure as hell not paying $10 or even $5 for a disc

  11. I did one DL backup with a DL disc I got for free with a order from NewEgg. I used a long movie (It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World) The backup works great but the price of the media is not worth it yet. Until the price comes down I'll continue to use single layer disc.

For the moment, im satisfied with using my sindle layer dvd burner. im not upgraing to DL until prices fall to a reasonable level and dvd-r9 discs also become available.

  13. An addition reason I am staying with SL; When I change the firmware on my 812S to that of the 832S the quality of the SL burn drops significantly. This should not be the case as the two firmwares are identical other than the addition of DL but it is true none the less.
