Since you are from UK, so it is PAL. Frame rate choose 25. As for the Audio, try PCM uncompressed. As for the rest, I guess you need to do a trail error with a short clip.

right...first off.
1."startup to fluff pictures" means that its like a digital noise suppressor on a tv.itll make a grainy movie more appealing to the eye by slightly "blurring out" the halos around characters, objects, etc.
but it can also make your movie look more, well, shitty.if you know what i mean.
so leave it unchecked unless the movie you have isnt really up to a good viewable par.
2."Enable direct AC3" means that if you have a divx.xvid movie with AC3-either 2 channel,or 5.1 channel audio, you can save time by just stripping that from the movie and not reconverting it to another AC3 file.(Winavi will do all this on the fly,and you wont know its happening,so its not an extra step,it just saves about 10 minutes.)
leave it unchecked unless the movie is 5.1 or AC3 2channel.
if the sound is mp3,or anothr format, then just leave it unchecked.
3.right click on the .avi file, and select properties, and in "summary-advanced" it should tell you lower down the screen, what the frame rate is,right beside the codec info.
so 23 fps is NTSC,25 is PAL(thats you and me),and 29 is NTSC too.
best bet is to pick "Auto" for format, and PAL for output.
4.target scale...i usually leave this as 4:3,as 16:9 will cut off quite a bit on some movies.4:3 on the other hand will keep the movie as is,and it may have borders on top and bottom, but its not that important,as tvs,dvd players let you get rid of these.
and for the quality of the file, just pick "highest",dont bother about the number of discs etc.
another tip is if you have the newer divx codecs,go into its configuration utility section, and let it "support generic mp4 files"-that way you strangely will get a better looking final dvd,but it will be slightly smaller than with the xvid codec.
hope that answers your questions for now.

Firstly,
Great Guide Rotten Fox Breath.
I have been struggling with AVI > DVD conversion for weeks.
I have been trawling this excellent site for guidance, but I am - to be honest - no further forward.
I am a newbie, to this DVD malarkey; and this guide helped enormously.
I have been using win avi to convert my avi files prior to authoring the vob files in DVD LAB PRO.
My first two attempts worked prefectly, however from then on I have been having audio sync problems.
I have found your guide which is simple and straight to the point, which is what I have been looking for.
The NTSC > PAL prompts would seem to have worked well.
The ac3 file and m2v file - in DVD LAB PRO - are showing the same length, however, when I am viewing the burned DVD disc there is still a 5-7 secs delay (audio ahead of Video).
Have you got any further suggestions on this??
Any comments would be much aprpeciated. -
ive pmed you a few views, but heres one.
use the prog "ifoedit" to author dvd, then in dvd-lab pro, join the vobs without demuxing to elementary streams, itll make a 4gig vob(or whaever size you need).
then import the joined vob, make a menu, chapters, etc, then author that one too,and burn it,it should be clear of any sync issues.
also remember to pick PAL for a PAL project, and NTSC for any others. -
or, it might just be the video your trying to convert, thats happened to me a couple times, and it was because of the video
-
yeh,
I discovered joining the vob file, and this works within fault. cheers again.
