  1. Dear Experts:

I have done enough research and didn't find a solution. Knowledges here are far better than any other forum on the Net. So I'll give this a try. Thanks for reading.

I am a PC game lover. Let's get straight to the point.
This has bothered me quite often in the past, but it gets more irritatin recently.
I bought many games like Splinter Cell2, Unreal Tournament 2k4, Thief3, GTA:Vice City, Battlefield Vietnam and very recent Far Cry. For your curiousity, these games are all real, no pirated games.

All these games have (had) encountered CRC error .(Cycle Redundancy Codes) during installation. Yes, every single title have tried to install for at least 5 times with different method.

Three games still not able to install due to CRC error. These errors will occur on average 3 times per try. Please suggest me all the solution you might have.

    My System: Win2000Pro,
    GeForceTi4200Turbo 128MB,
    512MB PC3200 RAM,
All HD are linked to 1st IDE with master HD at cable end.
Same for CD/DVD roms at 2nd IDE also master at cable end.
    Power: 400W.

    I have tried the following:

    1. safe mode install and the method of close third party applications.
FAILED only splinter cell 2 went through.

    2. I also went to the retailer to exchange another fresh copy
FAILED. The exchanged new copy have CRC error too. So it must be my system's problem.

    3. Updated firm ware. Yes I have up to date hardware drivers.
I have cleaned CD rom lens with cleaning kit. It normally have no problem Burning and reading.

    4. Restart system and try again.
yeah I did that several times.

    5. Switch cd drive.
    Did that too. FAILED

    6. Make an image of the cd and install from HD.
Been there done that, it gives me CRC error even by image files.

It is up to you experts who have any clue with this problem. I deeply thank you to share the knowledge. Thanks for reading and helping!

  3. Crc problem usually means the disc info is damaged or bad disc. Even you tried to do an image it will not helped. Exchanging a new copy may also encountered the same problem because the original source is damaged. Manufacturer don't make copies they stamped their discs. Try to install in another comp, if same problem just keep changing. I don't think it's your pc.

If it is your PC then I'd guess it to be the hard drive has errors on it. Run a disk check to see if it sees any bad sectors on it. Also wouldn't hurt to defrag it before the install. I'd actually think this is the reason more so than the install discs as it seems to be happening on several different games. You may need to do a low-level format and fresh install to fix the problem though.

  5. I would also make sure you have the latest versions of DirectX loaded. When was the last time the OS was re-installed? May be time again.

  6. Thank for all the reply.

    1. Original copies - It can't be all their problem beacuse our of every game I buy, they all have errors. I have a friend who tried install my copy of Battlefileld Vietnam, and it worked for him. So that why we came up that, this isn't related to the original CD. Thanks for the thought.

    2. I did try to defrag the HD before install. But it just won't go away. I will try to scan for bad sectors. Thanks.

    3. I do have latest direct X, 9b. Last time I reinstall was due to the "ultimate blue screen". it was a month ago.

I try a different CD/DVD reader/burner. You can buy a cd player real cheap now, or just borrow one.
Big Government is Big Business.. just without a product and at twice the price... after all if the opposite of pro is con then wouldn’t the opposite of progress be congress?
