What is more compatable, +r with bitsetting or -r

For the 1st time I have found my friends DVD player would not play a copy of a home dvd video (copy of a +r) I made for him on a TY G01 4x -r. (It plays fine in my Panisonic.)Does anyone know if a +R with bitsetting to DVD rom would have a higher percentage playing in standalone's.
My Pany will play a +R burned at 4x as a ROM but freezes if burnt at 8x ROM. My sharp will play both.

I believe those hundreds of 2.4xDVD+R's with the booktype of DVD-ROM I burned in the past are just as compatible as the DVD-R's that I burn lately.

In my opinion, the latest dvd players are capable of playing both dvd-r and dvd+r, regardless of booktype. however, its the older players that may not be compatible with certain media.

dvd+r with booktype dvd-rom would be more compatible with dvd-r, as the booktype dvd-rom fools the dvd player in thinking it is a store bought movie.

but it is not just limited to being either dvd-r or dvd+r, its also media issue. some media manufactured by one brand may play in a certain dvd player but media manufactured by another may not. there are a number of contributing factors.

I did not know that, how does the dye in dvd+r differ from dvd-r. Does the same principle apply to dvd+rw and dvd-rw as they use a different dye.

The 'dash' format is also older and more widely accepted. That's just one of the reasons why I prefer 'dash' to 'plus'.

If you make disks for yourself then it does not make any difference which format you use

If you make disks for someone else then you make disks that they can read ,DVD-R is better.

No there is no general difference between the reflectivity of a +R disc and a -R disc. The specifications are the same for both formats when it comes to reflectivity and Mr Lordsmurf has no proof whatsoever for what he is saying is true. Search the forum and you'll see it wasn't a long time ago he was writing BS about the book type, now it's reflectivity instead...

Reflectivity is the same. However, pre-pits on dvd-r's minght be slightly harder to read on crappy media than wobble on dvd+r's (which is how pressed dvd are done I think). But -r's been in production longer, so... kind of mixed right now though in the future crappy +r will probably a bit easier for old player to read than crappy -r media.

Well with the mixed responses I guess I gotta stick with I have been most succesfull with and that is -R, when I started I had some playback problems with +R but that was before I used the Book type program.
I am low on Discs and was gonna try some +r's but I will pay a little more and get the Made in Japan -R stuff.
From my limited experience there is no difference in quality between the formats so the only measureable difference is playback and how long they last. The jury will be out for a few years on the latter.

I run a small video store and from my own experience, DVD-R seems to be better. I have had problems with customers ranging from old DVD players to the latest ones when I loan them the +R (with bitsetting), but very minor problems so far with -R. So I do think -R is better, but again, that is from my own experience, others may find it different.
