  1. I've got an .mpg clip recorded from an 8mm via ATI AIW card and an .avi clip from a DV camera via firewire capture.
What's the best quality way to author them into the same DVD disc?

I have TMPGEnc Author but it does not accept .avi.
I also have Pinnacle Expression but it seems to be a buggy little program.

    I'd really appreciate recommendations.

    Thanks all.

If you want to put them on the same track then they have to be the same framerate and resolution. If not then they can be put on the same disk, just different tracks.

Your avi needs to be converted into a DVD compliant mpeg. Look up Avi to DVD in the guides. TMPGEnc (encoder not TDA) should be good for that.

Ulead VideoStudio 8 will do what you are looking for. The trial version is fully functional for 30 days.

  4. A free encoder for encoding avi to dvd mpeg 2 is bbmpeg. I would think that TMPGENC DVD Author would accept avis, I know TMPGENC does. Anyway, its worth giving bbmpeg a shot.

TDA is an authoring tool only, so you need to supply it with DVD ready mpegs. TMPGEnc is free for mpeg1.
